The symbol shows the location of the Bilsdale (North Yorkshire, England) transmitter which serves 570,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Bilsdale (North Yorkshire, England) mast?

Dave: thanks a lot for the info I will certainly do as you suggest, if it is pontop pike like you suspect then do you happen to know if they will continue to broadcast hd till the full switchover? Also (sorry to be a pain) but can you explain why I am picking up a signal from another area when I should be getting the bilsdale transmission.....is it just a case of my aerial pointing in a different direction? Am I likely to eventually end up with an inferior signal because of it? Sorry if these are dumb questions and I fully understand if you don't bother to reply.....much appreciated if you do though.

Cheers.

Marty: Aerials pick up signals from other transmitters, usually to a lesser degree than the one they are intended for. How much (and if at all) you could say depends on luck.

Evidently your aerial is picking up a HD signal from somewhere, and as Bilsdale doesn't broadcast HD at the moment, your receiver has tuned to it. So don't be surprised if reception isn't perfect because an off-beam signal is being received.

Yes, Pontop Pike will continue broadcasting HD as it does now until switchover. As I say, HD isn't part of the standard offering before switchover. A handful of transmitters nationwide that operate (and operated) before switchover were selected to carry HD services and Pontop Pike was one of them. This does not affect Bilsdale's HD signals that will come on air at switchover in September.

So come 26th September you should be able to receive HD services from Bilsdale.

Dave thank you for taking the time to explain the answers to my questions.....which I fully understand now, looking forward to the full switchover in September.

Best regards.

Come DSO at Bilsdale (BBCA DSO1,Wednesday 12 September 2012,the rest DSO2,Wednesday 26 September 2012) the new higher powered post digital switched signals of 100kw on the public service broadcasters multiplexes BBCA,D3+4 and BBCB (HD),plus the 50kw commercial multiplexes SDN,ArqA and ArqB will vastly improve reception in your locality which at present is somewhat difficult. However you stated that your aerial is directed at Bilsdale yet receive some Pontop Pike transmissions due to poor reception issues in your locality because of trees. Is your aerial that faces Bilsdale a group W wideband (tipped black) antenna by any chance ? For Bilsdale once DSO takes effect you need a group K (tipped grey) semi-wideband aerial (either Yagi 18K,or X-Beam 16K) which is optimised for the lower/middle frequency bands, fitted with superior copper-copper co-ax cable (black coloured preferred for longevity) and importantly brass co-ax plugs, not alloy or worse plastic ones they're useless.
If you decide to opt for Pontop Pike instead which also switches over simultaneously with Bilsdale too,you need either a group C/D Yagi 18C/D aerial (tipped green) or a group E semi-wideband (optimised for the middle/higher frequencies) X-Beam 16E aerial (tipped brown). One possibility is to use a variable frequency diplexer (if available),one that splits the signal at a certain frequency say for example at frequency 47 so you can effectively have two main transmitter choices, one group K aerial using Bilsdale and a second aerial either a group C/D (Yagi) or group E (X-Beam) aerial using Pontop Pike as well.
