The symbol shows the location of the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) transmitter which serves 4,490,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) mast?

Aerial Point: I don't think such a list exists. The changes to allow boxes to auto retune at switchover was added to the specification for Freeview (the so-called D-Book) quite some years ago.

Adrian: It is most likely the SCART cable that connects your Freeview box to the set. Remove it from both devices and then reconnect it firmly.

Aerial Point: Just to confirm / back up Briantist's reply to your query insomuch that this is quite correct there isn't any list, and with so many variations in the menu facilities offered between the various brands (and sometimes across different models within) from basic primitive to quite sophisticated its not practical to make a note of them.

Hello,

Recently moved into a new flat, and it picks up every single SD channel fine, however, it struggles with the HD channels.

When I first tuned it in the day time, it picked them all up, and the signal/quality were both strong. However, as soon as it got dark, it lost all signal/quality.

I have since retuned all channels, and it won't pick up any HD channels at all. Doing a signal check on channel 31 in the Manual install option gives 0% Signal and 0% quality, however every other frequency channel is around 70% signal, 100% quality.

Any ideas? Using a Humax HDR-FOX T2.

THanks all

Alex: Although the Crystal Palace signal on C31 is predicted to offer reasonable odds on giving good reception on the HD services, the signal is at risk of interference from both Sandy Heath and Reigate at your location. When retuning at a time of receiving a poor quality signal (or no signal) the details of the HD channels would have been removed from the receiver's memory. Wait until 18th April 2012 for the high power HD service to start at Crystal Palace, otherwise, until that date keep looking at doing a manual tune on C31 to see if the low power signal has returned.

Alex: The HD channels are on lower power than the other multiplexes at present, and the multiplex also uses the same channel as one of the SD multiplexes from Reigate, at the moment.

This will change on 18 April: the HD services will move, taking over Channel 4 analogue's frequency, and be boosted to the same high power as the other multiplexes' new power levels - 20x the current power level.

Night-time does tend to cause interfering signals to travel further, something called 'tropospheric enhancement'.

Alex. The HD channel is also at a higher bit rate, which means that it needs a better signal to noise ratio. This means that it is at a disadvantage of more than the factor of 2 implied by the relative transmit power, when compared with ITV multiplexes and even more when compared with BBC ones. It will still be at a disadvantage when it goes to full power in April.
