Thanks KB aerials. Might take it to my dad's who is nearer to Sutton Coldfield than we are. Will wait until their switch over and see if it comes back - UK Digital seem to think it will. Will also check out the attenuator thing although not really sure what I am doing LOL
Received this reply from the BBC reception people:
"We cannot answer every query or technical problem, however there are a number of places where you can go for technical information:
If your area is undergoing Digital Switchover, please contact Digital UK with your query since it could be related to transmitter work preparing your area for the switch to digital. You can find them at www.digitaluk.co.uk or by calling 08456 50 50 50.
For advice about your equipment or its configuration please contact your manufacturer."
What is annoying me is that everyone is passing the buck. It was fine before the switchover and you can't speak to someone who knows what they are doing to sort it out.
I wonder if part of the problem is the fact that it is a communal aerial on the flats next door so it has boosters etc... on it and it is also on the top of a very long pole. The trouble is the HA won't let us put our own aerial up so stuck with it.... GRRRR!

Gary: Thanks for the reply Mike; I had done a reset and manual tune; having Googled the problem it would appear normal to take a long time to populate the EPG, I waited 30mins after switch-on, then opened the program guide and found it fully populated. I suspect I may also have too much signal as you suggest; the Humax receives all channels ok, but my more sensitive Panasonic TV reported full signal strength on all channels when manually tuning, but then I found I had a blank screen on ITV channels with a "no signal" error, but perfect ITV picture through the Humax PVR.

So now that switchover is almost complete in the UK is there any chance of CBBC & CITV being removed from BBC1 & ITV1, now that everyone should be able to receive these channels?

Many thanks JB 38 you are correct my set is a Tosh I just happened to be stareing into a Hitachi monitor, sorry it was late. It appears I have been sold a dud and it dosn't have a DVB-T2 decoder.

Ivan Dilks: Thanks for the update on the situation, its unfortunate about your set but I can assure you that you are not by any means alone by being caught out by misleading descriptions being given, as I can see them virtually any time that I take a stroll around TV showrooms, even I have to occasionally scrutinise what I might be looking at as its not always immediately obvious whether a device can receive HD or not.
My advice to anyone is to get a cast iron guarantee from someone in authority that a device can receive what's desired, or ask to look at the spec in the user manual, DVB-T2 for Freeview HD or DVB-S2 for Freesat HD.

Ivan Dilks: Meant to add, and as you will likely already realise, but your TV can display HD perfectly OK by simply coupling it into a separate Freeview HD box via the HDMI connections on the rear, as there is virtually no difference in quality doing it that way over viewing via a built in tuner.

Pick up waltham transmitter, but since the retune on 31.01.2011, can only get BBC red button on BBC1 and not other BBC channels from waltham, but frustratingly can get it on 8?? channels (look North) where the reception is poor.

jb38: In fact, as HDMI is an uncompressed lossless digital transmission system, there is no difference whatsoever if you use a Freeview HD box to having a built in tuner.

Many thanks gents I think what I will do is replace my Pioneer HD ready recorder with blue ray player (it does neither) with a probably Sony HD recorder there are already too many odds and sods under the TV, sound system etc and my wife refuses to learn how to drive them all, so another box will drive her to divorce.
