Ed: Well, lets put it this way, I feel that I can say with reasonably high level of confidence, that if you are unable to achieve satisfactory results using the active log, then it's almost guaranteed that you won't by using anything else.

The only point I would like to make is concerning aerial height, insomuch that in situations such as yours don't automatically assume that the general rule of "the higher the better" always applies, as in many cases it doesn't, therefore experiment with the aerial mounted at different heights.

I did however have a somewhat more comprehensive study at your area via Google earth, and although I can't really say that I noticed any aerials pointing towards Tacolneston, (poss dated image!) I did though as far as Belmont is concerned, e.g: a property in Britons Lane facing (approx) towards Robyns Road, and of course Belmont is predicted as providing a higher signal level in your area, i.e: "variable and good" levels predicted across all Muxes, whereas with Tacolneston its "variable and poor", especially so the latter!

Taking the aforementioned into consideration, you might possibly achieve better results by concentrating on getting the best reception of the COM channels from Belmont, and using West Runton for the reception of PSB channels, as you will most likely find that West Runton can be received perfectly OK on the rear (or near anyway) of the aerial facing towards Belmont, meaning that you do not require a separate aerial for Runton. Needless to say, all channels being tuned in manually.

By the way, Belmont is located at 64 miles / 293 degrees, COM channels being : 30 - 53 - 60 - 33 - 35, the two latter being COM 7/8 transmitting on lower power than the rest.

West Runton @ approx 1 mile / 126 degrees, PSB channels being: 26 - 23 - 29. (Vertical polarity)

Tacolneston @ 29 miles / 184 degrees.

carolyn george : On having read over what you have said, and in particular the fact that your aerial installation as well as the equipment connected into same has been checked over by two separate engineers, I was just wondering if the fault referred to was actually in evidence at the time of any of their visits?

However, as to the cause of said problem, although an overly strong signal can indeed result in signal break up etc, the fact of you having stated that you can only view the BBC is inclined to suggest that this isn't the reason for your difficulty, as the BBC and ITV (excl ITV3) are transmitted on twice the power of all the other channels, i.e: the ones that you have reported as being unable to view, the reverse of what would be expected.

Another thing I wondered about being, as you would appear as being able to view Freeview via either the tuner in your TV, or alternatively via same in your "Freeview" set top box recorder, does the signal on the other channels referred to break up no matter what you are viewing them through?

To clarify the aforementioned, Freeview through the TV means using the TV's remote to change channels, whereas via the set to box, means by selecting the set top box via the "input select" button on the "TV's" remote control, but using the set top boxes remote control to change channels.

My personal suspicion is that your problem is possibly being cause by some intermittent form of localised interference, "local" meaning such as even through the adjoining wall between two properties.

carolyn george: I did also mean to add. That if the lead from your aerial passes through your set top box recorder and then into your TV?, check if anything changes by "not" placing the set top box in standby, as some set top boxes of the recording variety have an "eco" power saving mode in standby which kills the aerial loop through (in / out) facility, although in strong signal areas such as your own might only partially reduce the level of the signal being passed through to the TV, reception of sorts still being possible albeit with continual picture / audio glitches.

fozzy: Motors TV is broadcast on Winter Hills COM4 / Mux C58, your area predicted as having excellent reception from same, COM4 also used by such as (10) ITV3 / (20) Drama / (30*) STAR and a host of other programmes, are these seen on the EPG lisings?.

I also checked the list of programme channels specifically broadcast by Winter Hill, 240 being one of them.

You should try carrying out a manual scan on Mux C58 and see if this makes any difference.

fozzy : In addition to that said, all EPG listings from 240 - 255 (excl 245) are COM4 data channels, likewise the screen will remain blank until after 10 seconds or so (on average) if one is selected.

I only mention this as I suspect that you might be inching up the channels on your remote in the same way as done with non-data channels, the aforementioned time lag before anything appears giving you the impression that nothing has been received.

D. Noel: Try swapping the dish inputs over on your boxes and check the problem has transferred over to the Humax, if it has, then its either caused by water ingress in the LNB's "F" connector, or if inspection of same checks out OK, a defective port on the LNB.

That said is on the assumption that you have tried carrying out a rescan on your Goodmans?.

fozzy: In that case it would appear that for some reason or another your TV is failing to store most of COM4's IPTV channels, as 239 is broadcast on COM6 and with 256 being on COM7, the odd thing about this being that 248 (Africa Free TV) "is" on COM4.

As all these missing channel numbers are definitely broadcast by Winter Hill, albeit that its a bit of a bind having to do this, but you should try carrying out a "factory reset" on your TV and see if this resolves the problem, the procedure for same listed on page 196 of your i-manual.

Just in case you are unable to find it:

Press : Home button and select Settings - Select : system settings - general set up - factory settings - yes - yes.

Mr Ray Dowdall : As no faults are listed against the Littleborough transmitter, the problem referred to more likely caused by the power supply to the communal blocks aerial distribution amplifier having failed, or possibly just having been accidentally switched off!.

I would have a look around to see if any electrical maintenance vans are parked outside.

By the way, its inadvisable to retune equipment just because the signal has vanished, as all this achieves is to delete everything stored in the tuners memory, frequent retunes then being necessary to recover same otherwise it wont be known when the signal has returned.

Al Jazeera English
Wednesday 2 March 2016 9:01PM

gerry roper: The problem referred to is basically caused by Al Jazerra (108) now being broadcast by the COM7 (HD) multiplex whereas hitherto (on 133) it was COM6, this changeover creating a twofold difficulty for a number of viewers dependant on their location, as only a number of main stations covering larger populations actually transmits the COM7 multiplex.

The secondary problem being, that COM6 could be received by older TV's and boxes of the non HD variety whereas COM7 cannot, as by the latter being an HD multiplex its only receivable by equipment fitted with DVB-T2 tuners, i.e: true HD TV's (and boxes) and *not* HD ready types.

The only possibility some viewers *might* have (although its doubtful) of being able to continue receiving Al Jazerra is by tuning to a alternative station that does transmit COM7, a post code or one from somewhere nearby (e.g: shop / post office) required for checking.

That said, needless to say, the aforementioned can be disregarded by anyone *not* using true HDTV's or boxes.

fozzy: Well, although I did suspect that you may already have carried out the "factory reset" procedure, but though the reason for suggesting it be repeated was simply to eliminate the possibility of said reset / retune having been previously carried out whilst maintenance work was being carried out at the transmitter, the possible effect of having resulted in some form of glitch having occurred in the tuners memory system whereby some listings were dropped.

A secondary reason for requesting same was really connected with having had another look at the manual for your TV, and in particular the multitude of options in the programme guide section, especially the ability to move channels to other positions etc, any slight mistake upsetting the proverbial apple cart.

Taking all into consideration, the best policy is always to start afresh.

That said, I also feel that the situation could be somewhat clarified if you tested your aerial system out using a bog standard TV of either an HD or non HD variety, retuning same on your aerial then checking to see it came up with the EPG listings missing from your Sony, as I suspect that it would!
