To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

My postcode is LE3 8PG. I have just rescanned my digibox and find I receive Midlands Today instead of East Midlands regional TV. How do I get back East Midlands TV?

MR. ALAN SMITH: The reason for this is because your TV is tuning to the signal from Belmont (Lincolnshire) instead of Waltham.

The simplest answer is to run the auto-tune scan with the aerial unplugged and then plug it in again when it gets to 60%. This will have the aerial unplugged for all but Waltham (most of which are at the higher frequency end). I say most because SDN which carries ITV3, QVC and others is lower down and you will need to manually add it. Once you have done the auto-tune, go through to the manual tune and go to Ch29 and it should come up with the missing channels.

I have three freeview TV's all are tuned into the Sutton Coalfield transmiter, I would like to recieve East Midlands news not West Midlands as I live close to Derby, is it possible to do this with my equipment? My neibough has recently bought a new TV which gave him the option of East or West Midlands TV on set UP?

Hayden: This facility is shown in the tuning menu if the TV / box has scanned for channels and has picked up signals from more than one source, so if you are not sure whether or not your TV has this facility you will need to carry out a factory re-set then first time scan, which on completion you will get the choice you referred to "if" it has that facility.

Otherwise the only other way of obtaining East Midlands is to once again carry out a factory reset but do "not" let it auto-tune, as you require to carry out a manual tune of Ch61 (storing whatever received) then do the same again but this time on Ch54, these being BBC1 and ITV1 used by Waltham, and which by the way indicates similar results for reception using the p/code given as from Sutton Coldfield, that of being excellent.

However as far as Derby is concerned even although its only 8 miles away its not shown as being possible to receive it at your location, not that you would really want it anyway is its a Freeview "light" PSB only station. (restricted channels)

You can tell who is receiving it though by observing their aerial, if the elements are pointing up and down its Derby, as all main stations use horizontal polarization.

Once you have obtained the BBC and ITV channels desired, use the "add channels" (or whatever its called on your menu) to regain the remaining channels.

Hayden: Ignore comment about aerial polarization used for Derby, as I forgot that its the exception to the rule and uses horizontal the same as main stations.

Hayden: The target service areas for the Derby relay are the suburbs of Allestree and Chaddesden where an aerial pointing at Sutton Coldfield also points (roughly) to the mast in Littleover from which the relay transmits. If you wish to receive East Midlands news you need an aerial directed to the Waltham transmitter. The Digital UK postcode checker shows good reception should be possible on all six muxes from Waltham.

Hayden: Your neighbour's TV has evidently picked up the signals from Sutton Coldfield and Waltham. It deals with this by presenting a menu of the regions (and hence transmitters) it finds.

Other TVs/boxes don't do this and decide to make one of the transmitters the main one (using the standard logical numbering, i.e. 1=BBC One 2=BBC Two 3=ITV1 etc). They then put the programme channels for the other transmitter in the 800s.

So these are the two ways in which different models deal with receipt of multiple transmitters. It could be that your TVs are the latter type.

Either way, it is good practice to tune to the transmitter to which the aerial faces. Thus, if your neighbour's aerial points at Sutton Coldfield and he/she selects "East Midlands", then the aerial doesn't point in the direction that the signal tuned to is coming from. It may work alright, or it could cause issues with reception, all the time or at some times.

If you get an aerial pointing at Waltham (East Midlands), your TVs may still choose to make Sutton Coldfield the main transmitter. A way around this is to unplug the aerial for part of the automatic tuning scan. See here for a posting I made previously to someone in your part of the world:

My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

There is, of course, nothing to stop you doing this now, but if your aerial is on Sutton Coldfield then you will be receiving from a different direction to which your aerial points. The warning given above applies.
