Robert: A booster will have no effect whatsoever on low volume and I feel that you are looking in the wrong direction for the cause of your problem, because knowing these areas I can say that Waltham comes in with a very good signal on your side of Spalding, as indeed does Belmont and to a lesser degree Sandy.

It would be easier to offer advice if you gave some info on your set up, such as what you are using to receive Freeview as well as where your aerial is located.

I will point out though that unless a TV has an area selector facility to store only channels appropriate to the viewers location then you will nearly always have to manually tune in Waltham, as Belmont or Sandy will take up the low EPG numbers pushing Waltham's main channels into the 800 ranges.

I have a Linsar LPVR160 Digital TV recorder connected to Samsung digital TV. Ever since the changeover in August the Linsar does not record very well on ITV1, channel 4, channel 5 (BBC1 & 2 are perfect). The pictures jump and miss out small sections, but I can't understand why! It worked perfectly before the switchover in August. I have logged in all the channels manually (not automatically) as I understand the reception is better from the Waltham transmitter by doing it this way! I notice under frequency C54 that there is a 'minus' sign immediately after the number (ie C54-) and I was told this means that there are works taking place on this transmitter. Is this true and could this be why the recordings are so bad?

Mrs W Lovell: That indication simply means that there is a negative off set on the channel frequency and not that there is any work going on, and the problem you have is quite common on devices such as yours that's based on Vestel brand chassis, and which are used by about a couple of dozen other brand names, like Hitachi, Sharp, Philips, Digihome etc to name but a few.

This negative offset being used on certain channels in various stations has been the cause of numerous complaints regarding odd problems occurring, like a channel not coming on when selected, or when it does it glitches for no apparent reason, or recordings jumping or freezing when being played.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it, as although Vestel published over air software downloads in an attempt to cure the problem they were in many cases of somewhat limited success, and although the updates can still be obtained via a web site, its very complex to arrange as a laptop has to be connected into the PVR etc.

Mrs W Lovell: Just a little addition, I see you are located in Grantham and in many parts of it Belmont is received with a very good signal, and so you could try manually tuning in Belmonts ITV1 Mux on Ch25 as it doesn't have a negative offset.

Of course your aerial will not be pointing in that direction, but many have reported they can still receive it because of its high signal level received, the only downside of this action being that you would not get Central news.

By the way you could not use Belmont to replace Waltham, as Belmont's SDN (ITV3 etc) has a negative offset on it, the only way of getting around that being to use Waltham's SDN.
