Can you tell me please what the problem has been with the programmes from Waltham recently ?
For some time signals have been significantly weak, but over the past weekend BBC 1&2 have, for
long periods been unwatchable. During these spells programmes from ITV etc, via Waltham have
appeared as normal.

My aerial, feeder & TV check out as OK

H E Smith: There are no reported problems with Waltham. Having said that, I've suddenly got 'no signal' (or a highly fluctuating rubbish signal) on POP, so it might the transmitter. On the other hand, ITV HD seems fine, so it could just be my HD box is more sensitive than the TV, so its flipping out when the TV isn't.

Check your signal levels on BBC1 - too high or too low? Both cause problems. And check the other muxes - if there is a problem, it might be that the others are just above the threshold, but BBC1 has dipped below it.
And the old trick of swapping out the existing aerial lead might cure it - they get damaged, and certain muxes dont get picked up. Its a cheap and easy check, if nothing else.

MikeB: The present difficulties related to atmospheric conditions is causing all sorts of odd reception problems, as when I returned home this evening reception of PSB3 transmissions from both Waltham and Belmont was a no go, as although the strength of the signals from both were still around normal at 80% , the quality was zero, the situation remaining the same when tested a few minutes ago.

The strange thing being that Walthams COM7 HD (C31) was perfectly OK.

By the way, I use a pair of Logs for reception, one feeding each of the two TV's

jb38: Thats the strange thing - apart from that one (POP TV) mux, all the others are fine - in fact I'm reading pretty high (higher than normal)signal strength on one or two. I notice that we've seen lots of people complaining about total loss of signal tuned into Sandy Heath, but mostly in the Anglia area. Waltham /Belmont has been hit a bit, but not nearly as much. Perhaps Talcneston will be next?

The difficulty of course with diagnosing such a problem is that there are so many variables, but hopefully everything will be back to normal soon.

I, too have had problems with Waltham, BBC 1, after a long period when everything was fine. Sunday I had a come-and-go signal and Monday morning, 2nd. November, it was intermittent, with most of the time "no signal" shown. Could this be due to the fog?

Today, Tuesday, everything seems to be back to normal.

Clive:

Very unlikely to be due to the fog itself, but rather the probability of a temperature inversion due to the current weather patterns being experienced mainly in the southern parts of the UK. Because such payyerns are variable it is likely to give rise to the reception variations you report. Do NOT try retunin g when this is occuring.

Lots of problems in areas of Swanwick, near Alfreton, Derbyshire. Is it atmospherics? As no problems on Transmitter and to many calls from a condensed area?

Ian from Pinxton: Looking at Request Rejected it is doubtful if the problems are caused by the atmosphere. What do you mean by "Lots of problems" specifically?
