As I said Waltham ch56 (com5)loaded ok last night so I left it tuned in.

This morning the machine had locked up again.

After I did a reset I found a recording I'd done at 10 pm was ok so the problem occurred after that. I did a manual retune again and all of the Waltham channels except 56 tuned ok and had the usual EPG but as soon as I tuned to ch56 the system crashed and had a different, empty, EPG.

A couple of hours ago I did another retune leaving out ch56 and so far it is still working!

brian: I think you can safely add it back now as I did the same. EPG working again with all channels (set to UK).

Dave: This is what I thought last night!

I'll leave com5 off for the moment as there are programmes I want to record on the other channels and I don't want to risk loosing them. Will you post tomorrow if your set up is still working ok?

brian: Yes.

But mine always failed as soon as I added COM5 (by selecting the UHF channel on the signal strength screen).

Dave Lindsay: Re your 11.46am posting, yes! that's one of the pitfalls, although I suspect that the reason why no option is seen to disable channel updating (albeit it does for software) is possibly because that its tied in with keeping the programme guide information bang up to date in the same way as happens with all Vestel based PVR's, and why you are able to select a programme for recording well in advance of the present time and its there in the guide, unlike in the case of Humax PVR's of the 9200 / 9300 variety where if continually left in standby one is liable to be confronted with blank spaces until the guide catches up.

Pleasing to see that all would appear to be working OK again, and which I suspect is more likely to be connected with alterations having been made (or reversed) to COM 5's EPG data rather than anything connected with Sony.

jb38: When I found it working a few hours ago it was after I'd found a use for an old VHS video recorder. I set the modulator to C53 and fed the aerial through it and then into the Sony. This successfully prevented it from tuning in COM5 on C52.

However, on noting that the colour scheme had changed back I wondered if the issue had been resolved and so turned off the video and tuned in C52 to find it working OK.

Re: The Humaxs: Does this mean that if the broadcast schedule changes that they might not become 'aware' until it's too late (where a programme is brought forward)?

Sony UK acknowledge a problem with HXD units updated to firmware 1.70 on Friday.

Dominic Payer:
The "hidden software" update 1.70 only applies to certain models and was done by disc in 2010 for those that chose to do it and no later versions have been issued.
The "hidden software" update number for other models was different but the date and method was the same.
I think that people are posting and reading a version of chinese whispers and the BBC picked up on it without being able to have the full facts. The updated recorders have been running without problems until ~18:00 Friday 19th.
I have seen on the Sony information that Arqiva made some changes to the EPG at that time which is the reason for the problems.
Why the changes conflicted with the software is unknown but all is back to normal for the time being. I'm sure we will find out the reason and the action eventually.

I haven't read all the postings but my problem is with the epg of my SONY RDR-HXD895 failing on 19 July 2013. Is it a sony software problem, freeview or wha....?

BEJ Smith: I don't believe so.

It is more likely that the issue was one of what was transmitted contained error(s). It just so happened that these devices were "choked" on being fed this bad information. The point is that they (and all other devices) shouldn't have been given it in the first place.
