Nick : on my Sky Box (non-HD) the RGB setting is under System Settings:Picture Settings:Video Output. You can set it to PAL or RGB.
The Second Location Picture Format is for watching on a 2nd set using the 2nd RF out, not if you're connected via SCART. I have a long wire running upstairs to my bedroom portable and it uses that setting to have a 4:3 picture instead of 16:9, via a Magic Eye.

Found it! Thanks Dale. It does not make any difference either way now that I am back on the crt. I must set to rgb when I have to get a flat screen I suppose. Incidentally, I thought we used PAL, or does that only apply to analogue? Your help is much appreciated.

Nick : We DO use PAL rather than NTSC which is used in USA. An RGB signal keeps the three colours separate and gives a better quality picture, rather than the 3 colour signals all being rolled together: other people on here will give you a MUCH better explanation as to the difference, though!
If your CRT accepts RGB signals (depends on how old it is) it is still worth changing the Sky setting : you should notice an improvement. "Suck it and see" is generally my motto!

Thanks Dale. My crt actually gives a clearer picture using the aerial connections and putting the tv on a vacant channel. I think that is because however you change the picture settings on the tv and Sky, the picture is a bit smaller than via scart, don't know why. Do you have any comments on that? Best wishes.
crt is widescreen, via aerial sockets, picture still fills screen

Dear Brian,
Is Sudbury broadcasting any hd channel? Can't see it in the list at the top of this page, nor does anything come up when I tune in my box, even when I receive some channels from every mux.
Kind regards,
Nick

Nick: HD services start at switchover, apart from the few transmitters providing an early, temporary, HD service. These are large population centres where the HD signal could be crammed in, usually at lower power than the other multiplexes. The temporary service is replaced by the permanent service at switchover.

Early HD services are available from:

Lichfield, for Birmingham
Crystal Palace, for London
Black Hill, for Central Scotland
Pontop Pike, for Newcastle
Emley Moor, for Leeds

Winter Hill (for Manchester and the north-west) gained HD services at switchover, as have all transmitters which switched over from March 2010 onwards. Those that switched over before this were gradually upgraded between March and November last year.

No more early HD services are planned. HD services from Sudbury, and its relays, will start on 20 July, a little over a month away.

Are there any maps available showing what the predicted coverage will be from the Sudbury transmitter after DSO?

Lisa: The map at the top of the page is the coverage area for the Sudbury transmitter. Note that until mid 2012 the COM muxes will radiate at reduced power, so coverage will be less than that shown until full power is available. If you pop your postcode into the Digital UK postcode checker, (tick the trade box) you can see how reception on each mux will vary over the next year.
