John8: you can see a more detailed picture of what's happening to which multiplex at Digital UK - Postcode checker problem is that around the 27th of September, another transmitter will start using C48 - I believe it's the Sandy Heath transmitter, where ArqB moves to C48 on 14 September. Since it is the same multiplex, if they co-ordinate it, it could reinforce the signal from Nottingham rather than interfering, but this has not been announced and the predictors treat it as interfering. Some time in 2012, the same problem will happen with the SDN and ArqA multiplexes when another transmitter switches over, or has a post-switchover event. Since the date isn't shown in any more detail, it's hard to say which this is and what the effect will be. Again, it could be Sandy Heath, and again it could be reinforcing as the same channels are used for the same multiplexes. (RG47SH)

Considering how soon Digital Switchover in the Central region begins at Nottingham followed by a week later at transmitters such as Ridge Hill and The Wrekin, I'm surprised to see that Page 283 of ITV1 Analogue Teletext still doesn't show the actual DSO dates on it's teletext page.

Is this teletext page ran by the Teletext company, Central or by Digital UK?
Do you know if it will be updated before the first DSO?

Stuart O.: Central as a company no longer really exists. Carlton took it over in 1994 and merged with Granada to form ITV plc in 2004. The franchise licence is now registered to ITV Broadcast Limited (a subsidiary of ITV plc).

Teletext Ltd stopped providing the full service in 2009. The licence was revoked in January 2010 (and Teletext fined for continuing to broadcast it). However, I believe ITV were responsible for some pages, and these are the ones still broadcast.

Mike Dimmick: Well when I said Central, I did mean ITV Central as in regional news programme ITV Central Tonight or ITV plc. I am very well aware of the ITV merger. I still very much miss the fact that I used to be able to tune into HTV Wales, Granada and Central and find different programmes on each various times of the day and night. And also all the regional news programmes, studios and opening/closing titles were very different from each other but now thanks to ITV plc, those days are now long gone and never to return ever again!

But getting back to my point, when you say that ITV were responsible for some teletext pages, does that as of now still include page 283 of the Analogue teletext?

And do you think they will update it for all regions before Teletext completely comes to an end so that only subtitles page 888 are transmitted and then that page stops transmitting when the analogue signal for that channel switches off for good?

Stuart O.: I hadn't actually tried Teletext on ITV1 recently. From just trying it, as far as I can see, only pages 283, 284, and 888 are being broadcast. My recollection was that ITV franchises were responsible for some pages.

The rules are in Ofcom's document "Rules of Operation for the use of ITU-R (CCIR) Teletext System B" at http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/binaries/broadcast/guidance/tech-guidance/itu_r_teletext.pdf. It's defined in terms of 'magazines' numbered 1 to 8 - the first digit of the page number is the magazine number. For 'Channel 3' (ITV), the Public Teletext Licensee (which was Teletext Ltd) is responsible for magazines 1 to 5, the broadcaster can use magazine 6 and subtitles are on magazine 8.

The current issue of that document added the following text:

"In the absence of a Public Teletext service, the Channel 3 licensees, Channel 4 and S4C may use magazine 1 to provide a main introductory page on page 100 in order
to ensure reliable operation of domestic receivers. The Channel 3 licensees, Channel
4 and S4C may also use magazine 2 to provide information relating to Digital Switchover as agreed with Ofcom."

So in other words, it's ITV plc's responsibility.

ITV may update it, but Ofcom will not be trying to licence a new Public Service Teletext provider. See Ofcom | Report to the Secretary of State on the public teletext service for their report on the state of the Public Teletext Service. (RG47SH)

Alan Butler: The digital switchover dates differ according to which transmitter you are using for your TV reception. If you are tuned to the Nottingham/Kimberley transmitter switchover step1 takes place on Wednesday 30th March 2011. Switchover step2 is on 13th April 2011. There will be a retune date on 24th August 2011 when Mux ArqB changes frequency to C48, and a further retune on 27th September when Mux SDN changes frequency to C51 and Mux ArqA to C52.......................If you are using the Waltham transmitter there is a retune on 30th March when MuxA/SDN changes frequency to C29 and another retune on 13th April 2011 when Mux2 changes frequency to C31. Switchover step1 is on 17th August 2011 and switchover step2 is on 31st August 2011. A retune will also be required on 12th October 2011 when Mux SDN changes to 8k mode and power is increased......If you use Sutton Coldfield switchover step1 is on 7th September 2011 and switchover step2 is on 21st September 2011.
