sue evans: This is because the transmitter you are receiving from is a freeview 'lite' transmitter and only carries a few channels. The only transmitters that offer a full freeview service are all of the main transmitters and also relays that serve a large coverage area. If you supply your postcode, there may be a full service freeview transmitter available.

A Frith, it is hard to tell you when and what you should do without a postcode.
You don't have to wait until August to receive HD channels, they are already available on Freesat. Freesat offers a similar line up to freeview and offers free HD channels.
If you don't want to watch freesat though with a dish (which by the way isn't to do with SKY), you can receive free HD channels with Freeview, but you will have to supply your postcode to see what transmitter you may be using.

Your aerial installer will have probably pointed your aerial to Haslingden because that is the only transmitter available offering suitable reception. Have a look at digital uk postcode checker and see what that tells you.
If you really do want to receive from Winetrhill. Even though Winter Hill is receivable two miles down the road, there is always going to be a 'cut off' point where the signal from one transmitter (Winter Hill) is to weak, and signal from the other transmitter becomes the strongest one (from Haslingden)

It is likely to be the freesat box however it is more likely to be the dish alignment.

You will need another aerial on the roof to recieve freeview. Contact an installer to get it sorted.

Sheena:
Freesat boxes can be purchased from your local electronic retail company and are not expensive. Wiring from the dish will not be that expensive either. An installer may have to do this for you.
If you want to try and get your Freeview channels back, try an automatic retune, see this My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice (OL37EA)

When will we be able to receive digital radio in Saddleworth?
Poor signal using my indoor aerial.
If I use an outdoor DAB aerial, will I be able to extract radio signals from Holme Moss?
If not, when will digital radio be available in Saddleworth?

Colin: depends what you want to do with them... do you want to receive Sky or what?

Colin: If you want to receive analogue or freeview, this would not be possible as there are no english transmitters abroad. You can however receive Freesat or Freesat from Sky via a satellite dish as this will work fine abroad.

Mark - a '5/6 signal strength' is by far enough signal for your Freeview + box to work correctly. You will not encounter freezes or lockups or anything.
A signal strength that is 1/2/3 out of 6 would not be able to cope but 5/6 is fine.
