Carol Hills: You won't be able to get a refund on your TV Licence for a transmitter being off air. It is a licence to use television receiving equipment and BBC iPlayer, it isn't a subscription and does not guarantee any particular service being provided.

Malcolm Dale: The Sky Sports channels are subscription only and are not available on Freeview. If you mean FreeSports (which has no connection with Sky) it is broadcast on the COM7 multiplex, which is available from 25 main transmitters which cover around 70% of UK households, and can only be received if your TV or box is capable of receiving HD channels. If you provide a full postcode we can check whether you are likely to be able to receive FreeSports on COM7 at your location.

The BBC are now reporting that viewers in Hartlepool, Redcar and eastern parts of Middlesborough should now be able to receive a limited Freeview service (PSB1/2/3 multiplexes) from a temporary high power transmitter at Eston Nab (which usually operates at very low power to serve a small area) however viewers may need to manually tune to UHF channels 27, 24 and 21. I have also seen seen reports that the Whitby relay is back on air using a satellite backup feed, which may carry the wrong BBC One region.

Arqiva announced earlier today that a temporary mast is being transported to Bilsdale in order to start restoring services, although it will be shorter than the existing mast and could take several days or weeks to enter service.

david -NYorks: Olivers Mount is predicted to have a good signal at your location, so it may be worth trying via manual tuning, however you may find that your aerial needs turning around and remounting with vertical polarity (i.e. the rods going up and down rather than side to side for Bilsdale which uses horizontal polarity) although you could be lucky and find that you get enough signal being received off the side of your aerial.

ray clegg: That's impossible to answer at the moment. Engineers cannot work on the mast at Bilsdale until it has been confirmed to be structurally safe and although Arqiva have a temporary mast being transported to Bilsdale it will take time to be constructed and connected up to the transmitters, which could be anywhere from a few days to several weeks. If you provide a full postcode we can check whether you might be able to tune to another transmitter.

Carole Dewings: If you were using a 4G mobile internet connection and cannot get a signal from another phone mast then that would prevent your emails arriving. But as you are able to post on here, you would appear to still have a working internet connection, which would suggest that the problem with your email probably has nothing to do with the Bilsdale fire.

Tracey Iceton: TS21 covers a wide area, we need a full postcode (or one from a nearby shop, pub, school, church etc) to be able to see your predicted coverage.

Tracey Iceton: Pontop Pike is predicted to have a strong signal at your location, however you may need to turn your aerial around as Pontop Pike is only a few degrees off being in the opposite direction to Bilsdale, although having said that you may get lucky and be able to pick up enough signal off the back of the aerial. Try manual tuning on UHF channels 39/42/45/32/34/35 if you don't get anything from an automatic retune.

Craig Nelson: If you are loosing signal at the same time each day then it is most likely being caused by electrical interference from something either in your home or nearby (such as a neighbour's property) which is being switched on and off at the same time each day, probably on a timer. Equipment or appliances with an electric motor (e.g. heating pump or power tools) are common causes, as well as some types of LED light bulbs (particularly cheaper ones) which may not have adequate shielding against the emission of electromagnetic noise. It is very unlikely to be a problem at the transmitter.

AJ: As per my post on the previous page, Arqiva who operate the transmitter are transporting a temporary mast to Bilsdale, but it will take anything from a few days to several weeks for it to be constructed and brought in to service. No work can take place on the existing mast until it has been confirmed to be structurally safe. Some viewers have been able to retune to other transmitters, as Bilsdale has large areas overlapping coverage with Pontop Pike and Emley Moor, although for many this may involve turning their aerial around as the alternative transmitter is usually in a different direction, however some are lucky enough to be able to receive a signal off the back of side their aerial.

The TV Licence is not a subscription and does not guarantee that any particular service will be provided, so there is little possibility of any reduction or extension of any licences. Most people with an internet connection can access BBC iPlayer for no additional cost beyond that of the TV Licence and broadband connection which have already been paid for, as well as live/on demand streaming services from ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and various other commercial broadcaster, non of which require any form of subscription payment. So whilst streaming may not be possible for everyone, it is a viable option for many who have temporarily lost Freeview reception. Freesat is a useful option for properties which have already had a dish previously installed for Sky, as most are left in place after the subscription is cancelled. A Freesat box isn't always necessary as many TVs have built in satellite tuners, so anyone with an old/unused Sky dish should check for a screw-on satellite connection on the back of their TV.
