Thanks for the reply briantist.

Here is my original question and your reply (to save you looking back through pages of messages).

"I'm trying to set up an LG full hd tv using my virgin hd box. Don't have an HDMI cable so used the scart lead that attached the box to my old non-hd tv. It wont find any channels on autotune. We don't have a rooftop antennea, or even an indoor one, the virgin box is the only thing we get telly through. Will it not work at all until i get a HDMI cable?
Thanks
Dan"

"Dan: The TV set won't find any channels, you are only using as a "monitor" for the Virgin box, which does the receiving and decoding. "

Ok thanks, i understand that. Does that mean that i can't complete the initial setup of the tv (it is brand new) without having an aerial? Can i not just 'use it as a monitor' for my virgin box, dvd etc without going through the initial setup? As that's all i need, i don't need the freeview to be tuned in, but can't seem to get past that bit of the setup without completing it.
Thanks for your time
Dan
PS-the virgin box is now connected with HDMI cable

worked out how to switch between the inputs. Don't know if there's more to the setup that i can't get to without first tuning the telly, but it's fine, i can do what i bought it to do i guess.
Cheers for the help anyway.
