Sorry to disagree with you, Briantist, but I live in north Wales and my primary source of Freeview is from Winter Hill using an aerial with the elements mounted horizontally. Using the same aerial I also receive a perfectly acceptable signal from Storeton giving me the Welsh programmes, even though Storeton is approximateley 30 degrees off axis.

What!!! Are you saying that I'm imagining receiving Welsh programmes on C53 and C57? Please visit and I'll show you.

I live at CH7 3EB. From my roof I have line-of-sight vision of both Storeton and Winter Hill masts (weather permitting). If Storeton Wales does indeed transmit with horizontal polarisation then that probably explains why myself (and all my neighbours) can receive it.

The technical details at the top of this page show Storeton English service only. Any chance of showing the same level of detail for the Welsh service, Briantist?

I achieve 100% for both quality and signal strength when receiving normal freeview channels (with the exception of C55 which has a current signal strength of 80%).
However, when receiving HD on C54 the quality is only 70% and the signal strength 80%. Is there a technical reason why this should be the case and if so, is this likely to impact on picture / sound quality?

Thank you Brianist. Absolutely facinating to be able to compare theory with practice.

Where I live I'm only supposed to be able to pick up indoor signals from Moel-y-Parc, and even then I'm right on the service limit. In fact, I can get a lot more stations including local ones on Merseyside and even Key103Manchester. The proof of the pudding seems to be in the eating!

I've just bought a new Panasonic TV with built-in SD and HD tuners and all is well with excellent reception in N Wales from Winter Hill and Storeton (Wales). In order to improve the sound I've connected it to my HiFi using a Toslink optical cable and have no problems with all SD stations. However, I do have problems with HD transmissions on occasions when the sound disappears with certain programmes. This is particularly noticeable with BBC HD on channel 54 which does not output sound via the Toslink during the day when it previews programmes, but once it starts showing normal programmes the sound appears. Sound via the TV speakers and via analogue outputs is fine at all times. Is there a reason for this - D to A convertor not able to cope with different sound formats?

Can someone please tell me what the actual resolution of the HD channels transmitted on PSB3 is, and are there any differences between the various services?

Many thanks, Briantist. I have changed the default setting of the SPDIF selection from 'Auto' to 'PCM (the only options) and I now get a signal on all programmes.
What would we do without you!

Jordy / Briantist,

Which Bangor are you referring to - the one in N Wales or the one in N Ireland?

Hi Briantist,

I thought that Storeton also transmits with mixed polarity - vertically for it's English service and horizontally for it's Welsh service, although I note that only the English service is covered in detail on the relevant page with but a brief mention of the Welsh multiplexes with no technical details.
