As a corollary to Chris' comprehensive suggestions, it is worth noting that high pressure weather systems can affect propagation, and also cause interference from other transmitters - even from France. This has been observed, for example, on transmissions from Huntshaw Cross and Caradon.

Chris.SE: I hold an amateur radio licence, so I know about ducting. In this forum I avoid over-technical comments which might not be helpful to many enquirers.

The BBC is planning to switch off Radio Devon on 801kHz from the Barnstaple transmitter.

That means Radio Devon will only be available
1. via TV sound when nearby and when no-one is watching TV
2. via rooftop aerial and DAB or FM radio plugged into a wall socket
3. via internet and wifi or desktop PC

These options are very limiting, especially if required tech is not available.
Taking a portable radio around as hitherto to listen while doing other things
with a medium-wave radio tuned to Radio Devon 801kHz will no longer
be an option for many in low-lying and coastal areas.
It is unlikely that DAB and/or FM reception will be enhanced.

Give them a chance to sort out their technical problems! For a first broadcast, Dawbs managed the chain of technical hitches commendable. Audio modulation levels and lighting can easily be improved. If they clearly dififerentiate between news-facts and comments by presenters and interviewees, GBN will score over SN and BBC-N, both of which inject opinion into their "reports". Al-Jazeera is more objective, and has a main focus on world events. GBN could fill the gap by providing factual news separate from comment.

Wrong horse, wrong course.

So now : *if* we get an indoor signal, we toss our DAB receivers into landfill and buy DAB+ replacements.

Too many platforms. They all cost money.

DAB+ could be justified as the *final* platform if our money is spent on 99% nationwide *indoor* coverage.

Brian, you have been stalwart from the beginning. Thanks for all the input to update the site. Much appreciated!

Simon Wood: You might wish to consider switching to the Freesat satellite signal. For reliability in heavy rain etc, a 60cm or 90cm ground-mounted dish would be reliable.

We have always had occasional interference from France under high atmospheric pressure.
Let's hope the current engineering work results in improved reception for us all:-)

There seems to be a lot of mast-tinkering and reduced-power "pixellation" notifications at present.
Is this to improve Freeview reception - or in preparation of its demise - or what?
