Richard Goodson: The reception problem referred to is most likely resulting from a series of high pressure zones which are presently sweeping across most Northern areas of Scotland, the intensity of varying at different times during each day and causing erratic / intermittent reception. Unfortunately these conditions are predicted as not completely clearing away until around next Wednesday evening, although there will obviously be a few spells of respite every day.

By the way, its not really possible to assess the signal levels expected at your location, as although Digital UK has your location listed under the Glen Urquhart VP (vertical polarity) freeview light transmitter, you are forecast as only being able to receive the HD transmitter with a reception status of poor, BBC and ITV (SD) transmitters not being receivable, albeit in reality you do.

Marcia: Re Wonersh: Yes! this is a Freeview "light" transmitter, but which is indicated as not being receivable in the Walton on Thames area as this is covered by Crystal Palace.

On the subject of your TV, if as you have said, reception is only possible for around 5 or10 minutes or so on each occasion you have tried it, then thats inclined to suggest that your second hand TV has an internal power supply problem, this said on the assumption that your aerial is "not" amplified in any way? which it shouldnt be anyway, as Walton on Thames is indicated as having excellent reception from Crystal Palace across all eight (plus local) multiplexes available from this station.

It would though be of assistance if your post code was known, or at least one from somewhere nearby such as a shop / post office, this used purely for signal checking purposes.

nadia: A standard (non recording) Sky box has the following connection sockets.

1: A two pin socket to enable it to be connected into the mains supply, the cable supplied with all Sky boxes being of the moulded variety, a flat two pin mains connector plug being at one end and a 13amp mains plug at the other.

2: A scart socket to enable it to be connected into the TV via a scart lead.

3: A male threaded socket which the "F" connector on the end of the coax is screwed into.

If you are not be using a standard box but one of the Sky+ HD variety?, then you will have two "F" connector sockets, likewise the boxes HDMI socket (not fitted on a standard box) rather than its scart same will likely be used to connect it into your TV via an HDMI connector cable.

That said, its really a case of matching up the connection sockets on the rear of the Sky box with the ones on the end of the cables thats been ripped out, said connectors only fitting one way so its impossible to get them wrong, this even applying to the two "F" connectors used on Sky+ boxes, they can be connected either way around.

Barbara : The problem referred to is almost certainly related to the engineering works presently taking place at the Kendal transmitter, Digital UK having listed the station with a status of "possible service interuptions".

Barbara : Also mean't to say, that as you have carried out a retune whilst the transmitter was down this will have deleted the programme from the tuners memory, the way of restoring same is by carrying out a second (or more) retunes until it returns.

Vintage TV

alan read: Re: Vintage TV (82) Unfortunately not if receiving Freeview from the Reigate transmitter, as this programme is transmitted on Mux COM7 which is not part of the TX (transmitter) line up at Reigate, however DUK indicates that reception of COM7 should be possible in your area from Crystal Palace on Mux33.

Should you already be receiving Freeview from Crystal Palace? and yet are unable to view Vintage TV, then are you able to view BBC HD on 101?, if not, then this is why you are unable to view Vintage TV, as COM7 is an HD transmitter which can only be viewed on a HD receiver fitted with a DVB-T2 tuner, TV's of the "HD ready" variety not coming into this category, as they are only able to view HD images from an external source (e.g: Freeview/ Freesat HD box) via their HDMI input sockets.

By the way, Reigate is located at 6 miles/ 339 degrees with vertically polarised transmission, aerial elements positioned up/down, Crystal Palace located at 17miles/10 degrees with horizontally polarised transmission, aerial elements flat.

Further info / advice given as required.

Michael : Carry out a signal test check when you are able to view Vintage TV to ascertain the Mux channel number its being received on, as you are indicated by DUK as being able to receive this programme from either Winter Hill on Mux31 or Moel-Y- Parc on Mux32, DUK indicating excellent reception from the former, and although the signal path from Winter Hill is seen to suffer from two line of sight obstructions at around 1 and 2 miles prior to your area, terrain indications suggest them as being of a somewhat minor nature. Although it does have to be admitted that reception problems can occur more frequently in situations where line of sight obstructions are located close to the receiving end of the equation.

You can of course still carry out a signal strength test after reception has dropped out, the procedure being to select "manual tune" in the tuning menu followed by entering Winter Hills 31, but *not* followed by pressing search or scan, as this action allows the tuner to act as a form of signal meter devoid of theshold limitations allowing low level signals to be indicated in the strength/ quality bars.

If indications are a bit erratic from Winter Hills Mux 31, try Moel Y Parc's Mux32 in the manual tune test referred to, although evaluation of the indications received from either station should be used in conjunction with that said by MikeP about checking aerial directions etc.

Lindberg / Tom Peckham: A commercial decision based on costs was taken to remove Euronews from the Freesat platform, it is however still viewable on Freesat receivers if set (via their installation menu) to operate in their non-Freesat mode by entering the following parameters.

Frequency : 11.464Ghz
Polarity : Horizontal
Symbol rate: 22000
FEC: 5/6

Lindberg: Yes, give it a try, as Euronews can be received on "any" Freesat box when the transponder frequency that the programme is broadcast on is "manually" tuned into said box set to operate in its non-Freesat mode.

Unfortunately though its difficult to advise on the procedure used as menu systems vary from brand to brand, however, should you experience any difficulty in carrying out the task, I might be able to assist provided that you let me know the exact model of box (or Freesat TV?) you are using.

By the way, although Euronews can be received via a Sky box on 508, both my Freesat devices (Humax Foxsat PVR & Manhattan HD-S2 receiver) are tuned to receive Euronews.
