Nick: it sounds like you just have a rubbish LCD set. Mine, which is a cheap LG, has an excellent picture on the Sky channels connected via SCART. I DO have the output on the Sky box set to RGB. The analogue channels are very blurred but they go soon so haven't worried.
Despite what Brian says above, everyone I know agrees that the picture on an old CRT screen is much better defined than on an LCD : the best comparison I would make is that an SD picture on a CRT is equivalent to an HD picture on an LCD. So, yes, once again the British public have been conned into thinking that 'new' means 'improved'.

Nick : the RGB setting on Sky is on System Settings, Picture.
And, no, there are no phono output sockets on my LG LCD. This was quite annoying because, as you say, the sound on many of these sets is appalling. I have had to 'waste' one of the SCART output sockets on the set by connecting a SCART to Phono adaptor into it and then connecting phone leads back into my hi-fi amp.
As I say above, I am happy with the picture on my set on all digital sources (Built-in Freeview ; Sky ; External Freeview PVR ; DVD) but the analogue picture is poor.
Mine is only a 22" : larger ones make more of HD as stated above. Smaller ones, though , seem very poor : a friend of mine bought a 19" cheapo from Tesco and it was so bad she returned it and got her money back.

Nick : on my Sky Box (non-HD) the RGB setting is under System Settings:Picture Settings:Video Output. You can set it to PAL or RGB.
The Second Location Picture Format is for watching on a 2nd set using the 2nd RF out, not if you're connected via SCART. I have a long wire running upstairs to my bedroom portable and it uses that setting to have a 4:3 picture instead of 16:9, via a Magic Eye.

Nick : We DO use PAL rather than NTSC which is used in USA. An RGB signal keeps the three colours separate and gives a better quality picture, rather than the 3 colour signals all being rolled together: other people on here will give you a MUCH better explanation as to the difference, though!
If your CRT accepts RGB signals (depends on how old it is) it is still worth changing the Sky setting : you should notice an improvement. "Suck it and see" is generally my motto!

Heinz : the information at the top of this page DOES mention the lower power of ArqA, ArqB and SDN. I quote :

NOTE: ArqA starts up at DSO 2 (20 July) at 3kW, replacing Mux C on C54 at 1.5kW, 'until further notice'. ArqB starts up at DSO 2 at 2.2kW replacing Mux D on C50 at 1.1kW, moves to C63 (at 2.2kW) on 16 November. NOTE: SDN will temporarily operate on channel 49 (at 14kW ERP) from the first stage of Sudbury's switchover until mid-2012. Arqiva A will remain on its preswitchover channel (54) from switchover until mid-2012. Arqiva B will remain on its pre-switchover channel (50+) until late 2011, and then temporarily move to channel 63 (at 2.2kW ERP), before adopting its final allocation of channel 56 during mid-2012

Interesting that during the last week a black box has popped up onto BBC Freeview (during the tennis), telling me that Switchover will be occurring on the 14th and 28th September! Now I am on the Sudbury transmitter (unlike most parts of the country there really is no possibility of picking up stray digital signals from elsewhere here in Ipswich), and Sudbury dates are 6th and 20th July. The other East Anglia transmitters are Talconeston which switches in November and Sandy Heath which has already switched, so why am I getting this message?

Mike : pretty sure I've only noticed it on BBC 'Red Button' while watching Wimbledon. Have not had any genuine messages about Sudbury switchover on any channel! (though, to be fair, I usually watch analogue to make the most of it before it goes!)

As at 7:15, had 2 versions of BBC Four (and a few others) via Ch39 and Ch44. One allocated Channel 9 and the other Channel 800. Am currently at work, so will check again when I return home late afternoon.

Thanks Mike : I had researched all of this a lot over last few months, and had spotted some potential 'quirks' in this area which I have endeavoured to pass on to friends/colleagues e.g. unlike most transmitters, Sudbury switchover necessitates a (probable)change of aerial from Group B to Group E or W, particularly come November 2011 and then June 2012 ; but had not picked up on the temporary channel duplication.
Will check that I have the stronger version on Channel 9.

Cheers!

Mike : C56 from Sudbury B provides Mux 2 to the east of Sudbury (including those of us in Ipswich) until 20th July. C68 seems to only radiate to the west of Sudbury : we can't pick it up here in the east.
