Switchover starts in the East Midlands
Wednesday 31 August 2011 6:52PM

I'm well confused! I live in part of Derby that traditionally could not receive Waltham signal so used to get [West] Midlands Today etc., from Sutton Coldfield.

However, my Freeview HD tv this afternoon somehow retuned itself and this evening I'm receiving EAST Midlands Today! (with [West] Midlands Today now on Ch800).

Has the Waltham signal been boosted so that I can now receive it? And can I get BBC HD broadcasts? (I have a Freeview HD DVB-T2 tv). If so, where can I find them?

As I said, I'm well confused (of Derby!!)

Many thanks,

David

Chrissy - I don't know about Waltham being on REDUCED power, I live in Allestree and, because of the lie of the land, before today I couldn't get a Waltham signal and had to get tv from Sutton Coldfield (West Midlands). Tonight though there's a perfect Waltham signal and someone else has confirmed its power has been increased "phenomonally". May be you need to try one more full re-tune?

No sign of HD channels, maybe I'll have to wait until Sutton Coldfield switches at end of September. But if Waltham is now strong enough for me to get that for BBC1, etc., not sure why I can't get HD channels?

Ah ha!! Thank you KMJ, my BBC East Midlands is on C48 and hence no HD yet. You're all very clever, thank your for your help! (and btw yes, I've definitely got a DVB-T2 tuner!)

jb38 - No, it doesn't seem to find anything on Ch58.

I've just noticed something else in my settings:

LNA (Ch48) = On

Does this mean anything, what's "LNA"?!

Briantist - well I never knew that was a tv transmitter, always thought it was just something to do with the Fire Service HQ communications! I'm learning so much on this page, chuckle!

Keith - And I'm thinking of quitting my job and training to be an aerial engineer, big chuckle!!

Any idea why my Philips HDD/DVD recorder (DVDR7260H) has stopped finding all channels that appear to be on PSB1 and PSB2? It knows what and where they should be in the channel listing, but just doesn't 'find' them anymore, no matter how many times I retune. The other channels are ok.

I live in the west of Derby and get most of my channels from Sutton Coldfield, plus BBC East Midlands from the Derby relay. My tv receives all the channels totally fine.

My mum lives in Littleover, Derby, very close to the Derby relay transmitter and a the top of a slope. To the north and at the bottom of her garden are three small-leaved birch trees, about as tall as a house. Beyond these and going north down the slope are two bungalows. Since switchover, the occupants of these two bungalows say they have worse freeview reception than they had before, and are blaming my mother's trees for interference, to such an extent that she's contacted a tree surgeon to thin the trees.

But I'm not sure the trees are the cause at all. Surely if they had good freeview before switchover they should have it now, with much higher power? My mum did say at least one of the bungalows uses a signal amplifier, which again rang alarm bells with what I've read on these pages. But she also said the same bungalow had had an aerial engineer in to look at their set up, so surely he would have tried taking out the amplifier... wouldn't he?

I realise the properties being bungalows and down a north facing slope will have inherent problems getting good signals from both the Waltham amd Sutton Coldfield transmitters to the south (I don't know to which their aerials are directed) but could the trees actually be the cause of the problem?

Many thanks,
David
