Mendip (Somerset, England) DAB transmitter | free and easy

I live in BA8 0JX and until this week I have been able to get good reception of LBC. It just suddenly disappeared. At the same time the BBC stations also showed reduced signal, I guess due to the all day mists. It is clear again today and the BBC stations are back to their normal levels. I have tried a full retune of the radio but no change for LBC. The radio finds LBC during the search but come back with "not available". Has LBC stopped transmitting on the multiplex? I can only find reference to "station moved" on LBC website. I got the message earlier this week and retuned as intructed, it then worked OK but soon vanished.

Can anyone confirm tat the COM 7 HD multiplex is operating from the Mendip mast?
I have tried tuning channel 33 as given above but can find no signal. All signal levels are at 8 to 10 on the signal strength and quality meter for both normal and HD channels. Tried complete retune but still did not find COM7.

Tuner is Panasonic PVR 9 months old . Can receive with good strength signals for Wenvoe or Rowridge which have lower channel numbers than for Mendip so don't think that there is a problem with the aerial or PVR. In fact it's a pest, so normally manual tune.

Postcode BA8 0JX 17

Look forward to a response.

COM 7 & 8 from Mendip mast are on Chans 33 & 35.

I posted on this topic several months ago but got no response. COM 7 & 8 only transmit at 17.5KW not 100KW as for the other channels. Therefore users in some more remote/shaded areas will not receive the later HD channels.

I can receive ALL HD channels from Rowridge but then cannot get West news. Have been unable to find out if the channnels power will be increased, perhaps someone reading this will know.

Thanks for all your helpful replies. BUT you have all missed an important point! The channels from Rowridge are all at the low channel end of the band, COM7 is C31.

I receive all these, including Chan 31, at nearly full signal on the signal strength meter. Thus why should C33 not be seen?

The aerial is wideband and I have tried another with the same results.

Because the polar plot has no distance scale it is impossible to see whether I am outside COM7's predicted reception area.

Unfortunately I have been unable to find anyone in the village who has Freeview HD so am unable to check their reception.

All suggestions gratefully received.

Dave Lindsay -- Thanks for your very full answer. In order to answer you with 100% certainty I have just checked the channels and frequencies of both West and South TV transmissions.

My Panasonic Digital Recorder shows channel No, frequency, service i.e. West or South as well as error rate.

On turning the aerial towards Rowridge and tuning Chan 31 I get all of the correct channels on the correct Nos . The signal level is around 9 and the quality is hard over on maximum, the error rate is 0. The picture quality is excellent. On rotating the aerial to Mendip and tuning Chan 33 get a tiny signal that is not good enough to even try to tune. All other Mendip signals are much the same as for Rowridge.

On examining the map for Mendip there is a reception area that extends to Bournemouth via Blandford and to the Isle of Wight. I suggest that I may be benefitting from this freak but in the other direction. We have almost a clear view from SE to S as we are on an upward slope of the Blackmore Vale. It would be easy just to switch to Rowridge but as I said earlier we would have to take the south news.

Unless I can put up a 100ft pole for the aerial I have probably reached the end of my thoughts on this topic.

When I installed the FM aerial 8 years ago I also found that I get better reception from the direction of Rowridge than Wenvoe so have left it facing that way.

Thanks again for your assistance.

I cannot receive CITV on channel 122. Retuned chan 48 Com 4 but still no CITV. Get the message No Service. All other channels fine.

Does anyone know what's going on?
