Kate - You could also pose this question When is a satellite receiver "Free" to the customer on a subscription service, when it's functionality is downgraded on ceasing subscription?

rusty - You need a SKY subscription to obtain a Sports package and these are only available on a SKY receiver. SKY sports 1 and 2 are available on other platforms e;g: BT Vision and Cable, but you require the appropriate Freeview or Cable receiver aerial and or cable connection. - A "Freesat" receiver will not allow you to receive SKY subscription packages.

Bruce - Without a SKY subscription the only means of watching Eurosport is with a "Free to Air" Satellite receiver and a Satellite dish set up for Astra at 19 degrees South East. Audio though is in German.

Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat

Rusty - I have a Sports package from another European source - I also like my footy but SKY prices are outrageous. Whilst I can afford to pay for a package at a reasonable price, I am not prepared to continue to support the lifestyle of the Murdoch dynasty!

John - If it's the b/room and your not fussed about HD then an SD "Freesat" receiver at £29.00 from Argos or similar - HD if you want but a bit more in cost -. A Sat co-ax feed cable from the dish where the LNB at the end of the boom arm on the dish will have two spare ports, one of which you can connect to the receiver. Dependent on where your dish is located, you may need this done for you but shouldn' cost an arm and a leg to do..

Pam - You may need to have the LNB at the end of the dish arm upgraded dependent on what's in place at the moment and certainly another cable feed to supply the two tuners in the Humax. Shouldn't cost much to do this and would recommend you get a local rigger rather SKY who will set you back considerably more.

Dave - I think you can retain the functionality but have to pay for this I believe this is £10.00 per month. but I am not sure whether a basic subscription is also required. There are new "Freesat" DIR releases due and with prices coming down this might be a better option financially. Freesat gives you an iPlayer and ITV player option where you can catch up on programs missed. - you will never have the functionality of your "Freesat" receiver downgraded either.

Dave - My apologies - should be DTR short for Digital Television Recorder. I see that Brian has confirmed the Sky requirements to retain the functionality of the recording capability of your receiver.

Richard - Your Technomate can be tuned to most of these, excepting where there are subscription contracts with SKY and in some cases where some channels are included on "Freeview" but as yet not on "Freesat" 5+ and hopefully 5USA should be on "Freesat" by Christmas. Seems like Channel 5 are giving a shake up in their Links with SKY with channel 5 News provision moving from SKY to ITN. An EPG upgrade for Technomate receivers is downloadable from the manufacturer that gives a full 7day EPG. You should check it's compatible with your model before acquiring and installing.
