The symbol shows the location of the Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) transmitter which serves 1,550,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) mast?

Where we live, Northowram HX3 7WF we have excellent line-of-sight reception from Emley Moor with a strong, high-quality signal on most multiplexes.

The exception is Channel 36 where reception is iffy and programmes unwatchable. Why is this? Is it something to do with the temporary mast? Is it a directional phenomenon?

Yours sincerely,

Michael Crawford

I see Malcolm's comment on 29/5/2020 at 9:45 refers to the same channel from the same transmitter.

Dr SM Crawford:

Whilst Malcolm's problem may well have been due to a transmitter fault which wasn't identified/reported at that time, there was subsequent Planned Engineering at Emley w/c 8/6/20. As you say you should have excellent line of sight reception.
The problem you now see could well be a repeat of the same issue, which might be the reason that there has been major work at Emley since 4/12/20 see https://www.freeview.co.u…ters

The "temporary" mast was put up in 2017 with the intention of it being in place for 4 years whilst structural work was done at the top of the existing mast. However covid-19 has put pay to the work that was originally planned in 2020, so whether the current work is due to or causing the problem you currently see, we don't know, Arqiva don't normally provide that sort of detail.

M Ball:

There has been some recent major work at Emley (which was previously unlisted) see https://www.freeview.co.u…ters which supposedly has finished but it wouldn't surprise me if work is carrying on if/when weather permits etc. This may be giving rise to the problem you are seeing. There may be some other cause!

Make sure you are tuned to all the correct UHF channels for Emley, it's possible that during the work if there was no or weak signal you may have got tuned to another transmitter -
Emley's Multiplexes & UHF channels are now as follows, in the order -
PSBs1/BBCA, PSB2/D3&4, PSB3/BBCB HD, COM4/SDN, COM5/ArqA, COM6/ArqB, COM7 HD, & Local
C47, C44, C41, C33, C36, C48, C55, & C39. Whether you get satisfactory reception of COM7 or the Local multiplex will depend on location.

If the problem continues, post back, further information may have come to light.

peter:

I can't find any reports of problems affecting ArqB/COM6 and the transmitter isn't currently listed for Planned Engineering.
Is the problem still present? Are you receiving COM7 C55 ok?

It might be worth checking that your aerial seems intact and pointing in the correct direction (at your location bearing 124 degrees - that's 11 degrees E of SE with rods horizontal) and that your downlead looks undamaged (especially if it is old).
Also check all your coax plugs, connections, flyleads etc, unplug connectors check for corrosion or other problems and reconnect them. Flyleads are a common problem, try swapping/changing them. See what signal strengths and quality you are getting for the multiplexes (groups of channels) shown in your TV's tuning section.

Problematic connections, water ingress etc. can seem to affect reception of just AN individual or several multiplexes.

At 11:56 am each day my tv reception drops out for a couple of seconds. I live a mile from the Emley moor transmitter. The problem is my digital recorder actually stops the recording as there is no signal. Is there a reason and does anyone know if this will be rectified.

Kevin Gledhill: Emley Moor broadcasts to over 1.5 million homes and is also Arqiva's main transmitter monitoring station, so it is unlikely to be the transmitter cutting out. What is far more likely is that something in your home (or nearby) operating on a timer is switching on at 11:56 each day and causing a brief spike of electrical interference.

Kevin Gledhill:

I assume your aerial signal is first fed to your Digital Recorder and then to the TV. If you plug the aerial direct to the TV, does the TV still lose signal for a few seconds at 11.56am?

If not, this suggests there could be some setting in your digital recorder that is causing this, go through all the settings and redo any you find you need and delete any that you haven't set/don't need etc.

If the TV still has the same problem, this indicates it's some interference getting into your aerial system as StevensOnln1 has suggested.
Is your aerial fed to any form of booster/distribution amplifier? Do you have any electrical equipment on a timer that switches on (or off) at 11.56am each day?
