The symbol shows the location of the Rowridge (Isle Of Wight, England) transmitter which serves 620,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Rowridge (Isle Of Wight, England) mast?

jb38: Many thanks for the quick reply.

So if I understand correctly, if I used vertical polarity, I would not receive from LSO, com7, or com8, and so I would not receive BBC4 HD or BBC News HD for example?

Have I understood correctly please?

Paul Curtis: Well, nothing is really set in stone where RF signals are concerned, but judging by the levels indicated for your area from the H polarity 50Kw Com4/5/6 transmitters, I feel that its unlikely that you would receive anything of a workable strength from Com7 & 8 using a vertically polarised aerial, let alone the 10kw LSO transmitter.

I will say though, that the reception in your area must be a tad higher than the DUK predictor would suggest, as you are not indicated as being able to receive the LSO transmitter, your location being just outside of the beamed signals coverage area.

jb38: Thanks for the follow up. I think I will try a H polarisation first, and see how reliably that performs, and switch to V if needs be.

Paul Curtis: Yes, that's by far your best policy, as vertical polarity is only really of any advantage in area's that suffer from "iffy" reception of Com4/5/6 on horizontal polarity.

Hello there, whilst my aerial reception is very good I am not receiving all of the HD stations I should . I am unable to obtain the following :- 101 BBC1 HD, 102 BBC2 HD, 103 ITV HD, 104 C4 HD, etc. Other HD stations 106 upwards are all ok. Any advice please
Regards Tim

TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT: On the assumption that you reside in the Rowridge's transmitters coverage area? the question has to be, have you made any alterations to your aerial system? as the HD channels referred to 101 - 104 (no channel 5HD) are all transmitted on 200 Kw, whereas from 106 onwards its only 24.4 Kw.

The point of this being, that HD tuners are extremely vulnerable to high level signal swamping, whereby signals over a certain strength can overload the tuner resulting in no signal being seen.

If you are using any form of signal booster in your aerial system try by passing it.

Further advice based on reply.

TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT: Thanks for speedy reply. I reside in Bournemouth and have not altered any aspects of my aerial or installation. It was only after having new HD tv I discovered that I was unable to receive these HD stations. My aerial was erected in 2005/2006. and my reception is very clean on all other channels HD or not. I am not using a signal booster.

TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT: If the situation regarding 101-104 remains the same and that its not been rectified by carrying out a second retune? as the signal may have glitched during the initial tuning, the fact of you having said that 106 is OK (on a much lower powered Mux) rather indicates that you are receiving a good signal, maybe even too good for your new HD sets tuner!, therefore to test if this is liable to be the case or not try carrying out a signal test on C21, the Mux transmitter channel used by 101-104.

The procedure being to select "manual tune" in the tuning menu screen followed by entering 21 into the box but pausing at this point, because on most Freeview devices if anything is being received the strength and quality of the signal will be displayed on the indicator bars, although in signal overload conditions the indications might only appear for a few seconds or so, if even that!.

Another thing to check being, if you have any external devices coupled into your TV via an HDMI lead? make sure that the TV's aerial lead is kept well clear of the HDMI lead, as the radiation from said lead can sometimes cause problems with reception, this in many cases being frequency selective.

Needless to say, if you do have an HDMI cable running close to your aerial lead, carry out a retune after having repositioned same, as it might have blocked the signal during the initial tuning
procedure.

TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT: You havn't answered JB38's question about signal strength - my parents also live in the area, and their signal is very good, so the higher power HD channels being overloaded sounds a distinct possibility.

So we really need to know the following:

Postcode - which gives your location relative to the transmitter (just put it in the site when you reply, and it does the rest)

Type/model of TV

Signal strengths on the different muxes.

Then we can help more.
