BBC Two HD Channel to launch 26th March 2013

BBC Two HD will replace the existing BBC HD Channel and will be available subscription-free on all HD digital television platforms

BBC Two HD will replace the existing BBC HD Channel and will be
published on UK Free TV

As part of the DQF process of BBC cuts, the BBC HD channel is being replaced by BBC TWO HD. This will be a UK-wide service and will not have the occasional BBC Two opt-outs and presentation in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

BBC TWO HD will be 102 on Freeview HD, 169 on Sky HD and 109 on Freesat HD. The channel won't "HD auto swap" to 102 on Sky.

Janice Hadlow, Controller of BBC Two, said "BBC One HD has already proved to be highly valued by our audiences and I’m delighted that we’re able to follow this with the launch of BBC Two in HD. The launch of BBC Two HD will allow us to showcase more of our programmes at their very best – helping to highlight our commitment to high quality, engaging and ambitious programmes on BBC Two."

The BBC Two HD channel will be a simulcast network version of the BBC Two England schedule with a raft of new programmes available in HD for the first time including Paul Hollywood - Bread, The Fall, Science Britannica and Keeping Britain Alive as well as old programmes such as Mock The Week, QI and Springwatch.

The BBC HD channel launched in December 2007 and was the UK's first free-to-air, high-definition television channel. Since its launch, the BBC HD channel has broadcast a stand-alone schedule of BBC High Definition output from across the portfolio.

David: In addition to what Dave Lindsay has posted, ITV is required to conform to certain rules when it comes to advertising, because of their market domination. It's called Contract Rights Renewal (CRR) - see CRR explained: how contract rights renewal binds ITV ad sales | Media | guardian.co.uk .

ITV has to show non-national adverts, as part of this legal remedy.

The only regional content in England the BBC has is the regional news slots, and none of the studios are equipped for HD. For this reasons the BBC isn't spending money on HD versions for the English regions where it will only deliver SD content.

David Lindsey your not understanding what I'm unhappy about with BBC and HD.
I'm not asking at this stage for all regionals to be broadcast I'm wanting the BBC to do the same as ITV do and broadcast one of the other regions that is in HD in place of no program but a caption.
I will spell it out Yorkshire ITV gets the Granada Local program. ( I believe ITV have 2 HD stations only IE London and Granada.).

David: I see what you're saying now.

Reading your latest posting has reminded me of Royal Mail's policy for latest sending times from Post Offices. This was brought in a few years ago and is intended to offer consistent cut-off times across all branches.

My Post Office says that the cut-off for mail being sent that day is 16:10, and I shall assume that this is the case at others.

I'm a practical person, and when I send a letter, I want it to get there as quickly as possible. Rather than it going that day "if" the last collection has been, I am victim to this policy.

This sort of thing is a product of the consumer society we are now in.

David: It should say:

Rather than it going that day "if" the last collection has *not* been, I am victim to this policy.

David: Your assumption is incorrect.

ITV HD has London on 10832 H, Meridian and Central West on 10936 V [also STV], Granada on 10994 H

Pity we will lose the occasional BBC4 programmes now shown on BBCHD - as often they merit HD.

Tony Hill: If the "Freeview HD" extension proposals go ahead, the BBC have said they might then put HD versions of the "UK wide" services on it, and presumably Freesat as well.

Given that it would require just TWO transponder slots for BBC three/CBBC and BBC FOUR/CBeebies, this seems reasonable.

BBC One HD has four slots (England, Wales, Scotland, NI) and BBC TWO HD will have one.

Also, the BBC News channel is moving to a HD studio in NBH within weeks.... it would be a great shame for all that HD investment to not result in BBC News HD in the UK.

Briantist: I am a bit of an obsessive "recorder of things" and one of the things I analyse is our TV viewing. I used to do it by programme but that was an overwhelming task but I do do it for each day by hours viewed of each channel and whether it was live or recorded. From this I see that for 2012, 62% of BBC viewing was HD.
