No, you cannot use a satellite box to receive terrestrial programmes.

I don't want to use a satellite box I have a freeview box. I want to know if an existing dish for sky can be use with the freeview box.Can I use a cable splitter and run one end to the sky box the the other to a freeview box and get the freeview channels.

You cannot use a Freeview receiver with a satellite dish, only an aerial.

You also cannot split a satellite signal from a dish, if you want to run more than one box you must use a dual- or quad-LNB on the satellite dish and have a cable to each satellite receiver.

Sam: You should not lose any ITV or E4 channels on a Sky box unless some fault has developed in the box, you should remove the mains connection and leave the box unpowered for about a minute or so before reconnecting it again, then after it starts responding to the remote control let it go through its usual "searching for listings" procedure and see if these channels have returned.

Regarding the coax lead / connector plug you refer to, if the Sky engineer replaced the "F" connector then thats inclined to indicate that the lead is not suitable for Freeview reception as its a feed from the dish and is only suitable for another Sky box or a Freesat receiver.

If you are thinking on Freeview then you will require a normal aerial to be installed, but though your Sky box can connect into a (nearly any!) new TV via a scart lead, as then the TV is just acting like a monitor and as such does not require an aerial.

Have sky plus with and a quad lnb. Decided to use the one spare LNb connector to hook up to freeview set top box but getting no signal. Think connections are fine. Any ideas?

Nbh: On the assumption that you are actually meaning a "Freesat" set top box and NOT Freeview which uses a normal aerial, then if you are getting a "no signal" indication the problem could be caused by the spare port you have used on the LNB being defective, so try the "F" connector on the other spare output as they are all independent of each other, should though this not make any difference then the other possibility is that when you were screwing the "F" connector onto the coax a single strand of the braiding has caught around the middle core and is causing a short circuit.

However, if none of these measures cure the problem then try the "Freesat" box on one of the two inputs used by your Sky+ box box, as the box could be faulty.

Hi,

Hoping someone can answer this for me....

My Nan has just had a new tv with built in freeview, but freeview doesn't have all of the channels she wants, so she has a freesat box as well. When the tv is on and the built in freeview is being used the picture quality is fab but when we plug the freesat box in and use that, the picture quality is awful! Is this because of the built in freeview? Is there anyway of switching it off? Or anything at all we can do for her?

Claire: The difference in picture quality between Freesat and Freeview is in most cases negligible, and so something must be wrong with the method used to connect the Freesat box to the TV.

The normal method of connecting a Freesat box to a TV is simply by using a scart lead from the boxes AV1 scart output socket into the TV's AV1 input socket, because when the Freesat box is taken out of standby it will cause the TV to switch over to it thereby cutting out the Freeview picture.

The point being, do you have it connected this way?

Maybe you could give the model number of the Freesat box and also the TV.

Hi, I've stopped subscribing to Sky,kept the skyplus box and bought a Humax PVR-9150T freeview recorder so I can record, use live pause and playback. Is it possible to connect the Humax to the dish via the sky box or direct or anything in between? And what is an RF cable please? Sorry for my technical know how deficiences!

Gerry: The simple answer is no! as you are referring to two totally different systems, Freeview via a normal aerial and Sky via a dish.

Also, the Humax PVR recorder that you purchased in common with every other type of PVR (Freeview or Freesat) can only record from their own internal tuners and not from external devices, as although most PVR's have two scart sockets the second socket is purely for the purpose of either looping though some other external device e.g: DVD player in one socket and out the other, or alternatively recording from the Humax on to a DVD recorder or VCR, the main point being that its NOT for inwards recording.

Of course this is exactly the same as your Sky+ box, because as you will no doubt already know you cannot record from anything external on it either, as it only records from its own tuners.

Thanks very much JB 38. I assume therefore that I will need to have a digital aerial put up as I have only the old type. Or is there a simpler way to get my Humax up and running? Would be grateful to hear from you again.

Gerry: Aerials are not dedicated to any particular mode of reception and will receive anything that transmits on the frequency bands covered by the aerial, and so if you still have an old aerial and as far as you are aware its still OK, then there is no reason for it not picking up a Freeview signal, if that is one is there to pick up! because as you haven't supplied a post code or at least one from nearby, its not really possible for me to check on the signal levels expected in your area, and the name of the transmitter involved.

Of course you could just simply connect up your Humax and then carry out an auto tune to find out what's picked up, although I would be able to offer further advice if your location was known.

Gerry: Thanks again for your patience JB38. Now you see what I meant when I said I was know how deficient! My post code is NR13 5NG. I'll try auto tune - if I can understand how to do it. My problem is that I sometimes don't understand the terms used eg RF cable.
Kind regards
Gerry
