The symbol shows the location of the Limavady (Northern Ireland) transmitter which serves 45,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Limavady (Northern Ireland) mast?

I am sorry to hear about the problems you are experiencing with your TV and I understand this can be frustrating. Please be advised that unfortnuately your TV does not have the required built in tuner to pick up Freeview HD. Your TV has a DVB-T tuner which is a standard digital tuner, to recieve Freeview HD the TV would need a DVB-T2 tuner.
Although you need a DVB-T2 tuner to recieve Freeviw HD, you only require a DVB-T tuner to recieve Saorview HD due to the format it is broadcasted in, and this is why you are getting those. I am sorry for the inconvenience caused here.
Please see the tech specs of your TV below for further information:

david parker: Limavady does not broadcast RT because it is considered that there is sufficient overspill from the Republic.

At your location Limavady is on a bearing of 270 degrees. Moville is at 289 degrees.

You may, if you are lucky, be able to receive from both with a single aerial pointed somewhere between the two. Or, you may be able to do a manual tune with it as it is and receive from Moville.

Moville broadcasts on UHF channel 45. Go to the manual tune function and select C45. Before you press the button to scan/add channels, see if it gives any indication of strength/quality.

Failing that, other possibilities may include:

- Receive from Divis instead. The adjacent Black Mountain transmitter carries RT/TG4, although not as many as Moville which is a Saorview transmitter. These two transmitters are close enough that a single aerial will work.

- Receive Freeview from Divis and Saorview from Moville using two aerials combined into one feed.

If a single aerial pointing somewhere between Moville and Limavady doesn't work, then I don't think that you will be able to combine (diplex) two because of the UHF channels used by each transmitter.

If you are looking at receiving from Limavady and Moville with one aerial, then be aware that the higher the gain, the narrower the acceptance angle. So a high-gain aerial may not have a big enough angle of acceptance to receive from two transmitters that are 19 degrees apart.

According to the above map the Limavady transmitter can reach Scotland and Malin Head
in Donegal to deep into County Down but not Strabane which is only 30 miles away.
Can anyone explain this.

seamus o'doherty: If the ground was flat and a transmitter radiated the same level of signal in all directions (omnidirectional), then the coverage area would be a circle. However, the ground isn't flat and the terrain prevents reception.
Imagine if the signal were light, which isn't too dissimilar as they are both electromagnetic waves. An obstruction like a tree or a building creates a shadow and the same is true of the terrain.
The coverage map takes into account the terrain and shows green where the signal is expected to be available at rooftop height (above the ground).
Look at the map at imagine a line between Limavady and Strabane town. Along that line, the coverage stops roughly at the top of the "/" in the place name "Londonderry / Derry".
Referring to a map with contours it is easy to see why this is the case:

NIEA Map Viewer

Loughmore is very high ground and therefore blocks reception!
Theoretically, if you (in Strabane) were to go high enough to "see" over the obstruction, or at least high enough to where there is a bit of signal, then you would be able to receive from Limavady.
Thus, the signal is there, it's just way above you. The coverage map shows what you're interested in which is reception at roof-top level and not many tens or hundreds of metres above the ground.

Brendan: Quite a few transmitters that carry the Commercial (COM) channels have them at lower power than the Public Service (PSB) ones (usually half-power).
