Ed Stockings: Despite the current UK spec saying that the best transmitter should be tuned in, some HD boxes still do it the stupid way, selecting the first version found when scanning. Complain to the manufacturer (my guess is it's a Humax?)

You may also find that you're getting D3&4 (i.e. ITV1, C4, C5 and associated channels) from Sandy Heath rather than Crystal Palace, as this transmits on C24 from SH compared to C26 at CP.

A manual retune is the only way to ensure you're getting the services you do want. If it's still flaky after doing that, check for too much signal.

Hi,
I live very close to Crystal Palace. Until 18 April I used to receive a very good signal quality with all channels. Since the switch over, I have lost most of them, ie ITV3, etc.
I still have strong signal with other channels as BBC. I have tried to retune the box several times but it is not working. Any suggestions of what I can do? Thank you.

We've have just completed switchover here in Southend on Sea, Essex. Everything is fine, great pictures, strong signal, except for one oddity. I pick up ITV Anglia news, as I expect, but my neighbour in the SAME block, using the SAME communal aerial picks up ITV London news, which he doesn't want. We've spent time retuning, but can only repeat this odd situation. Can anyone explain how we pick up different transmitters for the same channel, same aerial?

roy in southend: London switchover completed last Wednesday and Anglia switchover completed last July.

So either:

1. you are tuned to an Anglia transmitter (probably Sudbury) even though the aerial faces London (Crystal Palace), or;

2. you have been incredibly slow at retuning, or;

3. your block of flats have two aerials (one on Sudbury and one on Crystal Palace) which are combined and fed throughout the building's distribution system. This would give you the choice of reliable reception of either region.

Some receivers, when they encounter signals from different regional transmitters, present the user with a menu with those regions. It is often the case that there is only a single aerial which is directed at one transmitter. Therefore selection of any region other than the one of that transmitter may be liable to poor reception because the aerial was not intended to pick it up. The same thing happened in the days of analogue and would usually result in a poor picture.

As for Crystal Palace vs Sudbury, the former uses low channel numbers and the latter's are higher. During the automatic tuning scan, Crystal Palace is picked up below 30% and Sudbury is above. So unplug the aerial lead during part of the scan, to avoid the respective transmitter's signals.

Hi there,

If someone could help me, I'd be extremely grateful.

My postcode is SO302AG and I live in Southampton, Hampshire. I have an LG 32LD490 TV, which has in-built Freeview HD.

Following the digital switchover on March, I understood that I should have been able to receive HD channels, however I am so far unable to. Whenever I retune the TV, it fails to find the HD channels (51, 52 etc...). I have reset the TV to factory settings and tried again. I have removed the booster from my aerial. I have bought an attenuator for the signal, in case it is too strong. I have tried the TV plugged into my separate loft aerial, which does not have a particularly strong signal. In all cases, no HD channels.

Strangely, I did once manage to receive them using an set-top aerial, however the reception was very poor and other Freeview channels were not found at all.

Can anyone give me any advice? I bought the TV specifically for the Freeview HD channels, so it is frustrating not to be able to receive them.

Can anyone assist me with this?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave in Southampton.
Is your main aerial polarised horizontally or vertically loft or externally mounted,and is it also a group A aerial (tipped red) or a group W wideband aerial (tipped black).
One possibility could be that the aerial co-ax cable needs replacing if it is rather old as HD broadcasts do give somewhat poor performance on old co-ax aerial cable.

I've always had good reception from Rowridge for the Yesterday channel, film4 etc. until the latest retuning!
Now get blochy/bad signals, one set top box will not even try to tune in this set of channels.
I notice that the signal is very weak compared to others WHY? I understood that with all this retuning the signal strength would INCREASE, hence BETTER reception, why is this not the case?
