published on UK Free TV

You can use the following ways to connect a set-top box to a TV:

1. SCART on STB to SCART on TV. This provides the best possible connection, with stereo sound and "RGB" highest quality connection;

2. SCART on STB to composite on TV. Older TVs without SCART connections usually have "composite" inputs, usually three "phono" sockets (often red, white and yellow). This offers stereo sound and good picture quality. You will need a special cable from a high-street retailer.

3. UHF ("aerial lead") box to TV. This requires that the STB you choose (all Sky, MOST Freeview) has a UHF output. You will need to "tune" the TV into the box, and you will get OK pictures and only mono sound.

If you are stuck with mono or poor quality sound on the TV, you can still use the SCART output (and the same cable as 2) to a separate amplifier to listen in stereo.

Wendy: OK, do this.

One SCART from the TV to the VIRGIN box's SCART port marked TV

One SCART from the VIRGIN box's SCART marked VCR to the vhs/dvd player/recorder combo.

To watch Virgin, put the Virgin box on.

To watch VHS/DVD put Virgin into stand-by mode.

You can also record from "showing" Virgin channel or playback to VCR.

Hope you can help with this. The new Virgin V HD box is a Cisco with only one scart on the back. With my Sky I can send the signal around the house with the RF out. Can I use this scart to put the signal through an old VCR and output it through the RF out to the rest of the house? Thanks

Derek: Basically yes! as you would just couple the Virgin boxes scart output into your VCR's set top box scart input, selecting this input on the VCR, then the VCR's RF modulator would output this scart input as though it was anything else.

I have an old panasonic tv (TX-25CK1) and have connected a BUSH (BU10FVZS1) set top box via a SCART lead. However the set up screen is not displaying on AV or any of the channels via manual tuning. I've checked the obvious things - the box is on, cable is properly plugged in etc. Any ideas?

Jonathan Chilvers: The TV should autodetect the SCART device coming on, if it isn't, I would try another SCART lead.
