If you cancel your contract with Sky the Sky+ box will revert to the function of a normal Freesat from Sky (fSfS) satellite receiver - no PVR facilities and only a single tuner.

The different channels you get on Freesat/fSfS and Freeview can be seen here:

Please don't use a loft aerial, they don't work with Freeview. You need a rooftop aerial for reliable reception.

If I get a SKY HD+ box but only pay Sky's normal subscription fees and not paying for Sky HD can I view the free HD channels like BBC1HD and ITV1HD.

It's my understanding that Sky now only supply SKY HD+ boxes even if a customer only wants a SKY+ box.

David Campbell: Yes, you can view free-to-air channels without a Sky HD subscription. Or indeed any subscription.

If I cancel Sky subscription (regular Sky+ box), do I keep the box (do I own it after I've been with Sky now for 2 years).

We have a SKY+ box and are no longer under contract with Sky. But to enable us to record programmes to watch later, and the pre-book whole series, using SkySat, we pay £10 per month to Sky to enable us to using the Sky+ box with all its facilities. I have been doing this for several years now and am wondering if the newer PVR TV recorders can do the same as our Sky+ box, but without having to pay £10 a month to Sky and actually store more programmes that we currently can. Our Sky+ box is about 3 years old - it replaced a previous one that had got old and cranky. We paid over £90 for our new one plus this £10p.m. to Sky. I think we could do better elsewhere but don't know where to start looking for good replacement TV recorders. Your help would be appreciated.
