published on UK Free TV

You can use the following ways to connect a set-top box to a TV:

1. SCART on STB to SCART on TV. This provides the best possible connection, with stereo sound and "RGB" highest quality connection;

2. SCART on STB to composite on TV. Older TVs without SCART connections usually have "composite" inputs, usually three "phono" sockets (often red, white and yellow). This offers stereo sound and good picture quality. You will need a special cable from a high-street retailer.

3. UHF ("aerial lead") box to TV. This requires that the STB you choose (all Sky, MOST Freeview) has a UHF output. You will need to "tune" the TV into the box, and you will get OK pictures and only mono sound.

If you are stuck with mono or poor quality sound on the TV, you can still use the SCART output (and the same cable as 2) to a separate amplifier to listen in stereo.

Hi,I am planning to buy a new tv (panasonic tx-p37c2 37" plasma). It only has 1 scart connection.I can connect my sky box but I want to buy a new dvd player as well (TV and DVD died together!). So how can I connect both sky and dvd player with only 1 scart? Old TV had 2 scarts so wasn't a problem.

Valerie, it's likely that a new DVD will have an option to connect to the TV's HDMI port(s) and most likely will have an HDMI included. If not they are readily available on the High Street. If you need to do this don't let a salesman talk you into an expensive cable a reasonable priced item from Tesco or the iokes will do the same job.

Thanks Les. I've just been looking at a Panasonic S38EB-K player and it says it doesn't have an HDMI connection and no HDMI upscaling so does that means it's no use to me?

I've just checked out a Philips DVP3580 and it's got HDMI connection and upscaler. The tv has got 1 scart and 2 HDMI connections so I'm guessing it's going to be suitable?
Sorry for being dim but I'm a bit of a useless with techy stuff!!

Valerie - Yes the Philips will be OK. Surprised though that the Panasonic didn't have HDMI. My Toshiba purchased well over a tear ago has an HDMI port.

Les,thanks for your help. I will order as soon as and hope i can get it all to work. If it doesn't then I'll know it's me that's the problem and not the tv or dvd player.

Hi, my Humax PVR 9200 loses tv signal when I turn the Samsung 6500 Bluray player on. Tv is a Samsung 6510. Humax box is using a scart lead which connects to the tv using the supplied (composite I think) converter. Just get "weak or bad signal" from the humax when Bluray is on. Any ideas? Thanks
