andrew baldock: Yes, you should also have BBC One HD. Channel 4 HD is coming in April.

Good morning to you.

I currently view Freesat through a Sky Amstrad DRX550 receiver - with a viewing card.

If I was to purchase a second hand Sky HD PVR, could I use my Freesat viewing card in such a machine without having to subscribe to any Sky packages - would this situation be acceptable/legal?

Mike Sugar: Yes, you can use the card in whatever box you like. A Sky+HD box won't play/record/pause without a subscription, but you will be able to watch BBC HD, BBC One HD and ITV1 HD.

A better option would be a Freesat HD box, this requires no card.

Channel 4 HD starts on Freesat in April.

Thank you for your kind response.

I receive both Freesat and Freeview. The latter service is limited insomuch I am receiving from a relay transmitter, and therefore only receiving a basic 7 or 8 channels.

I have a Tivo Series 1 PVR connected in line with the Sky DRX550, which allows a greater range of viewing - together with full recording options.

Unfortunately, where the Tivo service is now about to wind up, I will lose my capability to record.

Being retired, and on limited disposable income, I cannot afford to sign up to Sky.

This is why I was enquirying about using my Sky viewing card in a second hand Sky PVR - where I was hoping to use its recording features.

I have a sky+ box in my front room and a friend has given me his old sky+ box for my loft conversion so I can use it as a freesat box. Both boxes run from the same dish using a 4 point LNB plug on the dish. Downstairs is working fine but upstairs is saying no signal being received. When I was initially installing it I unplugged one of leads from the back of the upsstairs box to check the connector and got a picture, but when I reconnected the connector and plugged the second lead back in I lost it and now can't get it back. I tried to do a LNB reset as per one of your previous posts but in the menu option where you say to select 4 0 1, I don't have an option 0, only 1 to 8! Please help it's driving me nuts!

Brian Flanagan: You don't see any options, just press the buttons as described. It is SELECT-0-0-1 on HD boxes.

Mike Sugar: No, you need a Sky subscription to record/pause/play on a Sky+ or Sky+HD box.

You can get Freesat+HD boxes for quite reasonable prices, and no subscription or card is required.

I was listening to the TODAY programme on BBC R4 this morning and they were talking about reducing the amount of adverts per hour down from the current 8 minutes on the main commercial channels and by even more on the other digital commercial channels to improve "... the viewer experience...".

How does three (or sometimes more) ad breaks of 4 minutes and 15 seconds (minimum) on ITV1, Channel 4 & Channel 5 = 8 minutes ?? I am on a different planet in a different decade.

I make it at least 12 minutes and 45 seconds per hour not 8 minutes ? and that doesn't include promos, trailers and sponsored programme inserts "... brought to you by BT Vision.... !! etc.

Nedbod: Two things:

1) There are two different counts, one is the "average over the day" and the the other is "average during peak hours". Broadcasters use their allowance to put as many spot adverts in popular programmes as possible to maximize revenue;

2) The count is only for "spot" (paid for) adverts. It does not include any other promotional material, such as trailers for the broadcasters' own programmes OR services.

See Ofcom | Code on scheduling of TV advertising .

Since days we're having no signal on ASTRA 1 for Euronews, ZDF, ARD, but fairly alright reception on France 24 and CNN. Are the sunspots/eruptions the reason? Please help we're missing Euronews etc. very much
