How to Reset a Sky Digibox when 'No Signal' appears.

Reset method 1 - Delete and Rescan

  1. Turn the power off at the mains socket. Either do this by pulling the plug from the socket, or using a power switch if there is one.

  2. Remove the viewing card from the machine. Using a dry cloth or kitchen roll, clean the gold connector on the reverse of the card. Do not use any cleaning products.

  3. Check cables and connectors are in good order.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. With the card still out of the machine, plug the Digibox back into the mains.
  6. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  7. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  8. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  9. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Reset Method 2 - Reset the LNB

If the above method does not work, the LNB may have a fault.
  1. Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

On Sky HD, press the [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

Press the buttons in the sequence above exactly - do not atttempt to use [UP] or [DOWN]. Note that when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing happens on the screen until you press the final [SELECT]. This is a "hidden menu".

  2. Then press [1] to go to the RF output menu.
  3. Press [DOWN] three times to highlight the line 22Khz Command and then press [RIGHT] to change the value to [OFF].
  4. Press [DOWN] and [SELECT] to select Save New Settings.
  5. Press [SKY].
  6. Again press [SERVICES], [4], [0], [1], [SELECT]; then [1] again for the LNB Menu. (SERVICES 0 0 1 SELECT for Sky HD).
  7. Now press the [RED] button (reset all settings), then [DOWN] until you can select Save New Settings again.
  8. Press [SKY].

Reset Method 3 - Upgrade the system software

If there are still problems:

  1. Turn the Digibox off at the mains again and remove the viewing card.
  2. Whilst holding down the BACKUP key on the Digibox - NOT ON THE REMOTE - turn the mains power on.
  3. Keep hold of BACKUP until the screen displays a "UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE" message – this will be white text on a black screen. On some boxes this can appear as a half screen.

  4. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the software to download and install. The box will restart when the process is complete.
  5. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  6. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  7. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  8. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Nanette: Your Sky+ box irrespective of only using it for "free to view" channels (not Freeview which is via a normal aerial) is not affected by the changes you refer to, and if the box has stopped working its purely coincidental.

You should carry out a signal strength / quality check using the undermentioned procedure giving an update on results, and with further info dependant on whatever is seen displayed.

Press "services" and you will then see the main menu with "options" being highlighted, highlight the "settings" menu using the right arrow button and press select, then using the left / right arrow buttons scroll to "signal" and press select, this will then display the signal level indicator bars.

Both levels should indicate around 55% minimum for satisfactory operation, under this level reception will become erratic or vanish altogether.

By the way, you do not require a card to be inserted to receive most channels, the main purpose of the card being to ensure you can view the correct local news, albeit that will not apply if you having moved.

Nanette: Also meant to say, "if" you have two feeds from the dish only use the boxes LNB1 input, as LNB2 is basically used for recording purposes and which will have been disabled when you cancelled your Sky contract.

michael: If the bedroom box is a Sky+ HD box then try swapping the two rear "F" connectors around and see if that then results in a signal lock as well as a strength / quality indication, if it does then its liable to indicate that the LNB port used on the dish that feeds into the boxes LNB2 input is defective.

Of course its maybe much simpler just to swap the two boxes over to see if the fault follows the box, if it does then obviously its the box at fault, and if so most likely to be caused by the usual reason of the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply having dried up though heat and lost their capacity, this resulting in low voltage being fed to the tuner.

emily: Provided that the Sky boxes coax feed cable with the "F" connector on the end of has not been accidentally pulled as this always creates the possibility of an internal short circuit occurring, then it strongly suggests that your box has developed a fault, and this can happen with boxes of any age as Sky boxes power units are notorious for problems, especially if the box does not have sufficient ventilation.

A good test that sometimes reveals a power unit problem is to leave the box disconnected from the mains for about 20 minutes or so to let it cool down, then check to see if it works after having reconnected it again, albeit of course that it will go off again at some point.

Note though! insufficient ventilation can also be the cause of this happening, and in that case the box isnt really faulty as such, because rectifying the ventilation problem cures the fault.

However, should the aforementioned not really be applicable to your own particular installation then you should press "Services - 4 - 6" and check if the signal level is either low or completely dead, and if the latter then dependant on how friendly you are with your Sky using neighbours you should enquire if you can try your box on their system, as that will instantly pinpoint if the problem is with the box or not, as the case may be.

emily: Well now you have mentioned that you had a power cut then that brings another factor into the equation, being whether or not it affected the distribution system used in your apartment block, as although neighbours may well use Sky it might have been off with them as well.

That said though, I did actually mean for you to try "your" box on "their" installation, although the reverse is also OK. And another factor also exists that applies to transistorized equipment, insomuch that if an IC (chip) is not quite up to standard then the quickest way to test if its liable to fail is to let it completely cool down, as its always during this cool down state that it develops a fault.
