How to Reset a Sky Digibox when 'No Signal' appears.

Reset method 1 - Delete and Rescan

  1. Turn the power off at the mains socket. Either do this by pulling the plug from the socket, or using a power switch if there is one.

  2. Remove the viewing card from the machine. Using a dry cloth or kitchen roll, clean the gold connector on the reverse of the card. Do not use any cleaning products.

  3. Check cables and connectors are in good order.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. With the card still out of the machine, plug the Digibox back into the mains.
  6. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  7. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  8. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  9. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.


Reset Method 2 - Reset the LNB

If the above method does not work, the LNB may have a fault.
  1. Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

    On Sky HD, press the [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

    Press the buttons in the sequence above exactly - do not atttempt to use [UP] or [DOWN]. Note that when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing happens on the screen until you press the final [SELECT]. This is a "hidden menu".



  2. Then press [1] to go to the RF output menu.
  3. Press [DOWN] three times to highlight the line 22Khz Command and then press [RIGHT] to change the value to [OFF].
  4. Press [DOWN] and [SELECT] to select Save New Settings.
  5. Press [SKY].
  6. Again press [SERVICES], [4], [0], [1], [SELECT]; then [1] again for the LNB Menu. (SERVICES 0 0 1 SELECT for Sky HD).
  7. Now press the [RED] button (reset all settings), then [DOWN] until you can select Save New Settings again.
  8. Press [SKY].


Reset Method 3 - Upgrade the system software

If there are still problems:

  1. Turn the Digibox off at the mains again and remove the viewing card.
  2. Whilst holding down the BACKUP key on the Digibox - NOT ON THE REMOTE - turn the mains power on.
  3. Keep hold of BACKUP until the screen displays a "UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE" message – this will be white text on a black screen. On some boxes this can appear as a half screen.

  4. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the software to download and install. The box will restart when the process is complete.
  5. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  6. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  7. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  8. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

I was told on the Sky chat line to unscrew the cables on the box and reconnect them. This added to the problem (I was having) with the channels switching involuntarily.

What you must be careful of is damaging the 2 leads which is easily done. Because I couldn't see it at the time I'd bent the copper core on at least one of the connectors. I unscrewed them again and swapped them over to see if I'd put the wrong connector in the wrong socket.

What had happened was the leads had come loose. For anyone not used to setting up these boxes it can be a bit tricky getting it right. Had you not given me that little tip earlier I would not have tried once again to correct the leads to the small connectors which then screw into the back of the box.

After doing this I switched the box on and saw a blue screen. The "Your Sky+HD box isn't getting a signal" sign had gone. What I then did was unplugged the box for approximately 3 mins then switched it back on. When the box had re-booted all was well.

*UPDATE*

Still seems OK on the box not switching channels. I'll have to leave the remote in my room at some stage to see if it was the main factor in causing the initial problem. Will update you further on this over the next couple of days.

Jef: The usual cause of the actual coax becoming loose inside the "F" connector is by the connector being unscrewed whilst accidentally holding part of the knurled body of the plug as well as the flat nut section, as only the latter should be turned, however if you have now managed to cure the problem that's all that matters. Rebooting is always necessary if a box has been retuned whilst there was a fault on the inputs from the dish as the retune will have wiped the boxes memory of anything already stored, this meaning that once the input problem has been repaired its usually found that the box still wont work, a further reboot curing the problem, as indeed you have found. Although its a bit late now, but I found a You Tube video demo that you may find of interest on how to fit an "F" connector, the only point of criticism I do have of the demo being that the person demonstrating snips the copper core parallel to the front of the "F" connector, its always best angled. Jef.jb38 - Surprises me that SKY fitters haven't seen fit to move away from the these cheaper screw on "F" connectors. I use compression terminations, but there are Quickmount push/pin "F" connectors that offer superior pull off strength and that won't work off as when dusting or moving your receiver.

P>S If you need to re- terminate e;g; if you decide to re-site the receiver it's simple to snip off the termination if required and re-do the termination. The Quickmount type aren't that more costly and provide a better seal.

Les Nicol: Well the problem is, that these "F" connectors come in quite a range of different qualities with the cheapest types (usually with the nasty tag) being shorter in length as well as being made from the thinnest metal possible, whereas the high quality types are the complete opposite and of very good construction similar to a "quality" version of a BNC connector, quality being emphasised as there are some iffy types of these around.

Of course you have to look at it from the installation point of view, insomuch if a Sky engineer is standing up a ladder in less than ideal weather conditions then the last thing that's wanted (by him) is to fuss about with a pair of relatively heavy (and quality) crimping pliers for fitting that type of connector, albeit that type is considered as being more secure.

As far as Quick mount types are concerned, I use these on the numerous terminations on my own installation, and indeed carry around a few jumper leads fitted with these type of connectors for making quick tests on both Freeview and satellite equipment, likewise fully endorsing your own opinion on these items.

Les Nicol: one other thing I have never seen the coax jump out of the f connector on ther own, they don't have a life of there own , if you use the right f connector for the right coax it shouldn't come out also if you don't mess with the coax it won't come out.

OK, that seems to be fine now.

Get the "F" connectors sorted at the back of your box when the "Your Sky+HD box isn't getting a signal" sign appears.

Les, it would be more helpful if Sky did put the adapters on the end of the connectors. This would help the customer(s) and save time and money calling out an engineer.

Channels have stopped switching involuntarily. I guess this was to do with the "F" connectors.

jacquie: If you are referring to moving the box within the same household then did this involve coax cable extensions?

However irrespective of whether it did or not there is obviously a defect in the coax feed that's connected into the boxes LNB1 input and so you should try swapping LNB1 & LNB2 over, if the signal returns this means that the feed that now in LNB2 is defective, and so the "F" connector should be unscrewed from the coax and checked to make sure that "all" strands of the copper braiding has been pulled back over the coax's outer cover before the plug is screwed back onto the cable again.

Further advice dependant on reply.

Never had a problem in 5 years with sky until no signal and error 29 appeared. Did the usual on/off changing cables even bought new ones! Tried the steps above but I didnt reset the box as didnt want to lose recordings. First 2 steps never worked. I telephoned sky who were very helpful, went through a few steps which he told me it wasnt a fault with the box and must be the dish. As I'm in a flat with a communal dish I telephoned GHA my local housing association who have just been out and the amplifier needed changed on the dish! All working now. Hope this might help someone else.
