How to Reset a Sky Digibox when 'No Signal' appears.

Reset method 1 - Delete and Rescan

  1. Turn the power off at the mains socket. Either do this by pulling the plug from the socket, or using a power switch if there is one.

  2. Remove the viewing card from the machine. Using a dry cloth or kitchen roll, clean the gold connector on the reverse of the card. Do not use any cleaning products.

  3. Check cables and connectors are in good order.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. With the card still out of the machine, plug the Digibox back into the mains.
  6. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  7. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  8. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  9. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Reset Method 2 - Reset the LNB

If the above method does not work, the LNB may have a fault.
  1. Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

On Sky HD, press the [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

Press the buttons in the sequence above exactly - do not atttempt to use [UP] or [DOWN]. Note that when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing happens on the screen until you press the final [SELECT]. This is a "hidden menu".

  2. Then press [1] to go to the RF output menu.
  3. Press [DOWN] three times to highlight the line 22Khz Command and then press [RIGHT] to change the value to [OFF].
  4. Press [DOWN] and [SELECT] to select Save New Settings.
  5. Press [SKY].
  6. Again press [SERVICES], [4], [0], [1], [SELECT]; then [1] again for the LNB Menu. (SERVICES 0 0 1 SELECT for Sky HD).
  7. Now press the [RED] button (reset all settings), then [DOWN] until you can select Save New Settings again.
  8. Press [SKY].

Reset Method 3 - Upgrade the system software

If there are still problems:

  1. Turn the Digibox off at the mains again and remove the viewing card.
  2. Whilst holding down the BACKUP key on the Digibox - NOT ON THE REMOTE - turn the mains power on.
  3. Keep hold of BACKUP until the screen displays a "UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE" message – this will be white text on a black screen. On some boxes this can appear as a half screen.

  4. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the software to download and install. The box will restart when the process is complete.
  5. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  6. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  7. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  8. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

for 5 weeks have had continual daily loss of picture and break-up of transmission with "no signal" detected at dish ref.25. Despite several calls with help trying every suggestion, including change of skart lead etc. and following all instructions given problem still exists. all connections checked and found ok within property. can it be dish alignment or box problem. pl advise.

john stiff: A "no signal" message on a satellite installation whether it be Sky or Freesat is in most cases always connected to the dish or cables from, this being either that the dish has been moved slightly out of alignment by a gust of strong wind, or that water has managed to enter the "F" connector on the dishes LNB.

If water is the problem then the "F" connector on the LNB has to be unscrewed and then further unscrewed from the coax so that it can if necessary be dried out with a tissue, then smeared internally with some Vaseline before reassembly, although Silicone grease should really be used.

You haven't actually mentioned though if you carried out a signal check? if its a standard Sky box press "Services" then 4 - 6 and check if anything is being indicated, as even although you may well get a no signal message the strength / quality can still be indicated.

If they are, but at a level either on or under approx 50% of the scale then the dish has been moved "slightly", but if nothing is seen indicated it could have been moved well out as the difference between these two states is fractional to the extent that visually they would not be noticed.

Should though you be referring to a Sky+ box then swap over the two coax feeds on the rear, because if water is responsible then the chances are that only one connector would be affected and swapping them over could possibly bring the signal back, albeit of course that a fault would exist on the LNB2 input which is mainly used for recording.

Maybe you could give an update regarding the points mentioned, and clarify whether or not you do have a standard box or a Sky+ version (or Sky+ HD) as knowing what you are using saves inappropriate advice being given.

Apart from that mentioned the box itself could indeed be faulty, but the aforementioned has to be checked out as these are the most common reasons for the problem.

Further advice can be given dependant on reply.

Hi, I currently live in Spain and receive freeview channels via my old basic sky box without a card connected to a large dish. I have been given a sky HD+ box without a viewing card. Can i connect this up to receive the same channels (and maybe free HD channels)and being able to record?

D Williams (Mr): If your reception was perfectly OK before you made the alteration then either you have accidentally caused the dish to move very slightly from its original alignment, or that the type of LNB you used is not sitting in exactly the correct position for the dish to focus the signal onto.

Another possible reason could be that the LNB's skew position requires to be trimmed slightly, this being approximately 10 degrees or so to the right of vertical, this, or any adjustments being made preferably done whilst observing the boxes signal test screen, of if this is not possible because of the dishes position then at least constant references being made to it.

On a standard Sky box the signal check screen is accessed by pressing "Services - 4 - 6".

If you have a Sky+ box then press "services" and you will then see the main menu with "options" being highlighted, highlight the "settings" menu using the right arrow button and press select, then using the left / right arrow buttons scroll to "signal" and press select, this will then display the signal level indicator bars.

D Williams (Mr): This is a link explaining the meaning of an LNB's skew position, although I suspect thats its just possibly the case that the dish requires slight trimming in the horizontal plane (right to left) as any misalignment is nearly always in that plane, a test being to press the end of the dish on one side and then the other whilst viewing the signal check screen, as this will soon reveal the direction it requires to be moved.

What is LNB Skew?

Hi,

Our Sky+ was working fine, we recieved are new HD box and proceeded to set it up, unfortunately we had no luck, we kept getting the same message "`no default transponder" so after a few calls to sky they told us someone will be coming out next week, in the mean time we decided to put our original sky+ box back on, however now this wont work as it tells us there is no signal so we cant use it, ive tried the methods above but no luck.
Is there anything i could be missing ?

John: This has to be something connected to the feeds from the dish, and if the time factor involved between changing the boxes over was only about an hour or so then this would suggest that the coax feed thats used into the boxes LNB1 has possibly developed an internal short circuit such as a strand of the braiding having been accidentally caught around the middle core by the plugs casing, and not just the retainer, having been twisted.

For a test, try swapping the LNB1 input over with the one thats connected into LNB2 as the LNB1 input is the main one that's used for viewing, giving an update on results.

By the way, is the dish used exclusively yours or is it communal?

John: And by the way, after having changed these connectors over giving the box another rescan by disconnecting it from the mains, waiting 30 secs or so before reconnecting same and allowing it to go through its searching for listings procedure once it had started to respond to the remote control.
