Until recently I had a sky subscription. I had a sky+ box downstairs plus a standard sky box upstairs which I just received the free to air channels. I cancelled my sky subscription and replaced my sky+ box with a Humax Freesat box. Now my standard sky box upstairs only receives a signal(it shows the sky TV guide) when the Humax downstairs is switched on. Why is this and how can I rectify this problem? Thanks

John Watson: The coax feeds from the LNB mounted on the end of the dish arm to both the Humax Freesat box downstairs and the standard Sky box upstairs are, or should be, totally independent from each other with the exception of where the three (2 x Humax box / 1 x Sky box) coax cables are connected into the actual LNB on the dish.

The problem you have reported would suggest that they are not, and that two of them are possibly linked at some point.

Leave the Humax box switched off, and the Sky box on sitting on any channel, then try unscrewing each of the "F" connectors on the Humax box one at a time, checking the Sky box after each "F" connector is removed, replacing same if nothing has changed before removing the next, if though neither the two has made any difference check what happens if both "F" plugs are left disconnected.

Further advice dependant on the outcome of this test, also that said is on the assumption that the Freesat Humax box referred to is a twin tuner PVR? (recorder)

John Watson: Although what you are experiencing comes into the category of being a real oddball problem, it might indicate that the LNB is defective in some way, albeit that I have never at any time experienced this type of fault. Therefore I would like you to try a test of leaving the Humax out of the equation, i.e: uncoupled, and try the sky box connected into one of the two feeds used by your Humax, should it work OK, try it connected into the second feed.

John Watson: Also meant to say, that if the Sky box is found to work OK on both of the feeds used for the Humax, then if your LNB is of the quad variety, transfer the connector used for the Sky box over onto the LNB's spare port.

The other thing that you should check first though, is make sure that the power supply to the LNB is switched on, this achieved by pressing "services - 4 - 001- select", the latter done in an evenly spaced fashion.

Update on this problem. I replaced the Humax with the Sky+ Box that was previously installed and immediately received a signal on the Sky Standard Box upstairs (Sky+ Box switched off).
Perhaps not an "oddball" problem but more an issue of compatabilty?

John Watson: Humax satellite boxes "are" 100% compatible with Sky boxes and vice versa as far as the dish side of the equation is concerned.

Did you carry out the aforementioned (in previous reply) procedure on the Sky box upstairs to ensure that the LNB power is actually switched on? because although I only mentioned this at the very last minute, I really do feel that the problem is down to the power to the LNB having been switched off, this being the reason why the box only works when another device (Sky+ box) is connected downstairs as its powering the LNB, because even although a Sky box is in standby, power is still being supplied to the LNB, whereas on a Humax box its not , that is "if" the box has been set on "eco" mode.

You can check the Sky box upstairs by pressing "services - 4, then "0-0-1-select" and that will take you into the installers menu where you will see LNB set up as the first item in the list, pressing on LNB opening the menu showing the various settings, if LNB power is "off" switch it on and make sure that you save the setting.

We need more precise information to be able to help you, such as where exactly do you mean by 'abroad'? You will not be able to get any Freeview channels outside of the UK, but you may be able to get some of the PSB channels via the Astra satellites at orbital position 28.2 and 28.5 degrees east as they carry the FreeSat services. The footprint of those transmisions does not cover the whole of Europe though.
