My ITV/C4 Freeview channels have disappeared - what can I do?
published on UK Free TV

It is a feature of television signals that they can be effected by the weather. Aside from the obvious damaged that can be caused by wind or torrential rain, the onset of summer can cause a more intriguing problem called "inversion".

Basically, when the sun heats up the land, the hot air can get trapped below cold air at high level. This creates an "inversion layer" which acts like a polished mirror to TV signals. This causes two problems: you can receive both the original and a reflected signal from your own transmitter (on analogue TV this appears as "ghosting") or interference from TV transmitters that are normally too far distant.

The ITV/C4 multiplex of channels (ITV-1, ITV-2, ITV-3, ITV-4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, Quizcall) use a transmission "mode" called 64QAM, and it is sadly much more prone to these problems.

So, whilst a loft-mounted aerial will provide reception at some time, it will fail at others. The only real solution is to mount the aerial (or a new Class I aerial) outside on a pole, but some people report that changing the cable from the aerial to the set-top box to the high-grade satellite cable can also help.

The SCART connection, by the way, only carries a single TV picture, not the Freeview transmission multiplexes, so if this is disconnected it will result in degradation to every channel at once.

Thought I would look up if anyone had any trouble with heir freeview TVs since the update on the 3rd Sept and found this thread. My mother has had an odd issue since retuning her 8 year old Panasonic TX-32LXD60A. The channels seem to be all there and available. However, when she clicks on Guide, all the future channel data is blank. On the majority of channels (not all) it lists the current program playing but that's it. The guide used to display a digital clock...that has disappeared and all future programs/days programmes are displayed as blank. she has tried retuning many times but to no avail and has tried a Conditional reset which I think is an equivalent to a factory reset but still to no avail.
Means that she cannot see what's on many channels unless she selects it.
Anyone come across this problem? Any ideas to resolve?

Many thanks

Maureen Clark: if an EPG listing number vanishes from the list "without" having carried out a retune, which by the way can cause it to be lost if for any reason the signal is down at the time the scan is carried out, but should the latter not apply then carry out a reset on the box followed by a normal auto tune.

Should your box be the PVR version? you will "not" lose any of your recordings, but though you will all personal settings irrespective of whether PVR or not.

I have the same issue TVONICS freeview box keeps saying need to retune channel has changed and ITV disappears from position 3 but is on 803 and 802. I force factory reset and retune and everything is ok then after a while the a channel has changed message appears and forces a retune (cannot say no) then after retune ITV has gone from channel 3. What the hell is going on and how to sort it please? :).

I don't appear to be able to get the new ITV channel Be. I have freeview built into my tv's. Am I being to eager as it hasn't gone live yet. Or is going to be another case of the Weymouth area not receiving it. Is there any thing I can get to receive it. I really need to keep up with ' housewives' of sagas. Any help would be appreciated. Janet Polden: The ability to view (26) ITVBe is dependant on which transmitter you receive Freeview from, as it has to be from a main station and not a Freeview light transmitter such as Weymouth, the easy way to find out being whether or not you can view ITV3, as ITVBe is on the same SDN multiplex as ITV3.

Should you be able to receive (10) ITV3 but (26) is not indicated on the EPG listings, try retuning your TV to update the listings.

Hi

I have lost all of my channels on my Freeview TV. I have retuned and only 3 channels have returned. I have retuned again and now have lost all of the channels again. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to get the channels back. Thank you

Kind regards

Claudette : Unfortunately its not really possible for anyone to give advice on a query of this nature without first of all having knowledge of your location, this in the form of a post code or one from nearby such as a shop / post office, as this would then enable access to info on the transmitters that covers your area, as what you have reported could suggest that either you reside in a bad area for reception, or alternatively are receiving a low signal level due to a fault somewhere on your aerial system, this ranging from a faulty jumper lead, defective booster (if used), or a defective connection on the actual aerial itself where the coax joins into same.

After the recent bad weather, I seem to have lost all channels apart from BBC channels and pick tv etc, ITV has disappeared and even after a few retuned, it hasn't returned. However, even on the channels we can watch, the signal is not as good as it previously has been. Could this simply be that the aerial has moved position, or could it be a drop in signal in our local area? My postcode is PR6 (Chorley, Lancashire)
