Brian Butterworth published on UK Free TV It is a feature of television signals that they can be effected by the weather. Aside from the obvious damaged that can be caused by wind or torrential rain, the onset of summer can cause a more intriguing problem called "inversion".
Basically, when the sun heats up the land, the hot air can get trapped below cold air at high level. This creates an "inversion layer" which acts like a polished mirror to TV signals. This causes two problems: you can receive both the original and a reflected signal from your own transmitter (on analogue TV this appears as "ghosting") or interference from TV transmitters that are normally too far distant.
The ITV/C4 multiplex of channels (ITV-1, ITV-2, ITV-3, ITV-4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, Quizcall) use a transmission "mode" called 64QAM, and it is sadly much more prone to these problems.
So, whilst a loft-mounted aerial will provide reception at some time, it will fail at others. The only real solution is to mount the aerial (or a new Class I aerial) outside on a pole, but some people report that changing the cable from the aerial to the set-top box to the high-grade satellite cable can also help.
The SCART connection, by the way, only carries a single TV picture, not the Freeview transmission multiplexes, so if this is disconnected it will result in degradation to every channel at once.

We have no bb c channels since changes totransmitter 10/04 how can we get them back post code wn71Lj thanks

post code ll28 5uh ,all channels itv,ch4 etc received on ch41 have now a poor signal and are pixelated ,ch 47 all bbc ok.done reinstall not helped.

since the changes on the 10.4.13 I keep losing the BBC channels and have to re-tune the TV each time I switch it on. Is this a problem for others and how do I fix it.

In response to Steve Dakin above: we are having exactly the smw problem with one of our tv's. Every time we switch it on, we have to retune the freeview to get the BBC channels. The other TV's are fine though. Very frustrating to sat the least. I am still trying to find a solution so will keep you posted.

Similar problem to previous posts, retuned earlier this month, and no longer receive RT, Al Jazeera, Yesterday to name but a few.. I've tried retuning many times but they wont come back!! I'm missing Max Keiser's acidic financial comments immensley, I'm located in the Merseyside area, please help

Griffojack: Queries involving reception problems have to be accompanied by a post code or at least one from somewhere nearby, e.g: a shop or post office, as knowledge of same enables anyone offering advice access to info on the details of transmitter covering the area.

Griffojack: The main reason for the post code is that although Winter Hill (@ 26 miles) does cover Merseyside another transmitter called Storeton (@ 3 miles) also covers part of the area, this being why a more precise location is required to help determine which transmitter is involved.
However as Winter Hill would appear to offer the best signal where you are located you should try manually tuning in the missing mux channel used by RT / Film 4 / Yesterday etc which is Ch55.
If this draws a blank then go into the manual tuning menu enter Ch29 and try a scan on that channel, this being Storetons equivalent of Winter Hills Ch55, if though neither results in success then carry out a signal strength test on both channels, this achieved by once again entering the manual tune facility and entering Ch55 but NOT followed by pressing search or scan, because if a signal is being received it should be indicated as soon as you entered the mux channel into the box, note whatever it is then carry out the same check again but on Ch29, once again noting the result and giving an update of same.
By the way, are you on a communal aerial system?

Hi JB,
Tests done, tried rescans on both 55 and 29, no extra channels, then checked strength and quality, 29 both at 0% and 55 strength = 70%, quality = 40%, this my own ariel it sitting upright on my 2 storey roof.
Storeton's quite close to me should I go and give the transmitter a tap with my 2 pound hammer?
