What connections are used from set top box to TV (such as SCART) ?
Brian Butterworth published on UK Free TV You can use the following ways to connect a set-top box to a TV:
1. SCART on STB to SCART on TV. This provides the best possible connection, with stereo sound and "RGB" highest quality connection;
2. SCART on STB to composite on TV. Older TVs without SCART connections usually have "composite" inputs, usually three "phono" sockets (often red, white and yellow). This offers stereo sound and good picture quality. You will need a special cable from a high-street retailer.
3. UHF ("aerial lead") box to TV. This requires that the STB you choose (all Sky, MOST Freeview) has a UHF output. You will need to "tune" the TV into the box, and you will get OK pictures and only mono sound.
If you are stuck with mono or poor quality sound on the TV, you can still use the SCART output (and the same cable as 2) to a separate amplifier to listen in stereo.

Adrian: Sounds like the Blu-Ray player's power supply isn't right, generating electrical noise. I'd get it replaced. Can the TV tune into Freeview channels when the Blu-Ray player is on? If it can't, that would reinforce the idea.
Otherwise, just try to keep the aerial cable away from the box as much as possible. If you have a fairly thin aerial lead going to a wall socket, consider replacing it with a better one. Online Satellite/TV/FM/DAB Cable, Leads and Connectors sales. message is definitely coming from the Humax, not the TV? The SCART dongle has a really, really, really thin lead that I wouldn't trust in the slightest (it should have at minimum 10 of 21 wires plus shielding). Again, keep it away from any other electrical equipment. (RG47SH)

You're on the money Mike! In answer to your question, Yes both the Humax AND TV lose the tv signal when the Bluray is on. I moved the Bluray power cable well away from the tv aeriel and the tv channels started working via the Humax and TV fine. Great stuff. I will however upgrade the TV aerial to a better quality one.

Hello I have a virgin media + box which normally works fine with my sony bravia TV.
I have replaced the TV with a Hitachi DVD/TV combi and plug the scart into the TV then to the box and no signal is picked up when I do the initial set-up search. I have plugged an aerial cable into the tv and to the V+ box also but to no prevail. I am confused as to why the TV is not picking up the V+ box. any help apprecaited please.

Felicity McAndrew: Use an HDMI cable to connect the V+ box to the TV, or a SCART if you don't have one.
You do not then "tune" into the box, it will appear as one of the "direct inputs" to the set.

I Have purchased LG hd ready tv + freeview and a Sharp freeview+hd digital recorder.The picture on tv is excellent but on the box it is dim.Would an hdmi cable solve this or is there a problem with the box?

Hi i have a virgin set top box not v+ a philips dvd recorder and an old video, i currently use a 20 year old mitsubishi tv with 2 scarts ,i need to replace the tv , do i need to get another tv with 2 scarts as neither of the other equipment i imagine will have hdmi connectors and most tvs seem to have only one scart, thanks very much .

phil: You can connect the DVD Recorder to the "other" SCART on the Virgin box. There is no need for the second SCART for that.

Hello
I have a Humax freeview recorder set top box. It is connected via SCART to the back of the TV. The problem is that once I add my DVD player to the equation, it all goes wrong. I connect the Humax box to the DVD player via Scart as well. But the sound is problamatic. Firstly, if I am watching a DVD and the Humax starts to record something on the TV, we suddenly lose all sound on the DVD that is playing. Also, the sound on the DVD that we are watching is barely registering so you have to turn it right up. Third problem is that the Tv often does not register the Humax box - you have to turn the two off, then turn on the TV and leave for 30 seconds, then turn on the Humax box. Any suggestions for what is going on would be gratefully received! Thank you very much

Nic: You sound like you have created a "SCART loop". Only connect one SCART from a device to the TV, use the "VCR SCART" on the Humax to connect to the DVD.
Then put the Humax into stand-by mode to access the DVD.
