You can use the following ways to connect a set-top box to a TV:

1. SCART on STB to SCART on TV. This provides the best possible connection, with stereo sound and "RGB" highest quality connection;

2. SCART on STB to composite on TV. Older TVs without SCART connections usually have "composite" inputs, usually three "phono" sockets (often red, white and yellow). This offers stereo sound and good picture quality. You will need a special cable from a high-street retailer.

3. UHF ("aerial lead") box to TV. This requires that the STB you choose (all Sky, MOST Freeview) has a UHF output. You will need to "tune" the TV into the box, and you will get OK pictures and only mono sound.

If you are stuck with mono or poor quality sound on the TV, you can still use the SCART output (and the same cable as 2) to a separate amplifier to listen in stereo.

I have 2 TVs in my house. TV1 is connected to my Virgin Media Digibox (it was the generation of box before TVio). The digibox has an RF output. I want to transfer the picture to TV2 (as we rarely watch TV1). I don't even mind having to go into a different room to change channel (I don't want to move the digibox as it is hidden away and I don't want a digibox sitting under TV2 which is mounted to the wall). What do I do? Am I able to transfer the picture from digibox to TV2?

carole: You need to buy a set top box which has a built in RF modulator. This transmits the output of the box as an analogue signal on a UHF frequency so you can receive it via the aerial socket on your TV. For Freeview there are still a few such boxes available, but they take a bit of finding, more likely to find on Amazon than in a local shop! For satellite reception using a Sky box would be the best option.

Until today we had a Panasonic Freeview/DVD Recorder in the back room linked to a Panasonic TV. In the front room we had Virgin Media cabled into a CRT TV. Today we had VM come and relocate the VM box from front to back rooms and I have wired up the 'Freeview Box' to the CRT - TV cable into RF IN on Freeview Box and cable from RF OUT to TV IN socket on back of CRT TV. I have also connected a Scart cable from AV IN (Box) to AV IN (TV).
Until the change around we have all Freeview channels. Now all we have is BBC TV and Radio. 2 years ago we had a digital arial installed and evrything was superb until now. Any ideas. Location is Nottingham NG2

I have a Sovos DVB-T dvd/video recorder Model SVS01 Class 1 Laser Product with built in Freeview also a virgin media supply box, HD TV and TV Arial.
What is the best way to connect these so as to receive good quality picture and sound from both and to utilize the dvd/ video recorder?

Neil Henderson: The common link between the items mentioned is the TV, and so maybe you could indicate what make / model it is? also is the Virgin Media box an HD one?

Hello,

I've looked through the previous exchanges but have not noticed one which matches my problem. I've been using without problems a Panasonic Viera digital HD ready TV, with a Virgin V+ box, and a Panasonic VHS recorder/DVD player. I wanted to be able to record programmes onto a disk rather than VHS. As I would be upgrading i decided to go for blu-ray also. I now have a Panasonic BWT700EB blu-ray/DVD recorder with 320GB hard disk. I've substituted it for the VHS and followed the same wiring arrangement. The TV works through the recorder well enough but the picture is not as sharp as through the STB, but I'm less concerned about that at the moment. I can record TV and playback from both DVD RW disk and hard disk without problem. What I can not do at present is to record programmes stored on my STB onto a DVD-RW or to the DVD hard drive, which was the main purpose in switching from VHS. Neither can I pick up the non-freeview channels on the DVD recorder - I have the full set of sky ssports, movies, etc. on my STB, so am not able to record any of those channels from TV through the STB to the recorder. My attempt at recording from an STB stored programme today functioned seemingly as normal, although the STB did not ask me for the receiving device, and nothing appeared on the DVD-RW.

My wiring is as follows: RF in from DVD to TV input on STB; RF out from DVD to TV aerial input on TV; Scartfrom AV2 on TV to AV1 (TV) on DVD; and Scart from AV2 on DVD to bottom scart socket (marked VCR) on STB.

I would be grateful for your advice please.

Geoff

Rob: If you use either a Freeview HD or Freesat HD box with both having HDMI sockets then you dont require to use the scart lead, if your TV has more than one HDMI input make sure that this one is used or you will have to select the HDMI input used via the TV's input selector which is usually located on the remote control.
