My Sky box has a "no signal message" - what do I do?

My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

jb38 sorry i did not really answer your question the other dish is only a regular one, and as quad was fitted, it was easier for sky man to fit to that ,he did it as a favour.

maureen williams: I think(?) that I understand your system, its just that its unusual for a property to use two dishes.

Yes, check out the "F" plug, although there is another way that you could verify if the lead was at fault or not and that is by temporarily trying the Sky+ box on it using only its LNB1 input, although I do appreciate that to try this would probably cause an upset to your layout, especially if the Sky+ box was housed in a cabinet of any sorts.

The point to remember though being, that each lead from an LNB on a dish is totally independent from any of the other outlet ports seen, and if its found that a "no signal" indication is obtained from more than one port then in 99.9% of the cases its because the dish is "very" slightly out of alignment in its horizontal plane, a slight nudge being given on either its left or right hand sides "sometimes" bringing it back into alignment.

Joe: On checking back on your original posting I see that you have two Sky+ boxes, and so the easiest way of finding out where the fault is located is by swapping the two boxes over, as should the fault stay upstairs then it has to be something connected with the dish feeds, such as the "F" connectors / cable being having become waterlogged, so the "F" connectors on the block should be unscrewed and checked out.

The other point is, that if the upstairs uses two of the feeds from the dish arms quad block and the other two is used for downstairs, then the dish must be aligned OK or it would affect downstairs as well, so that aspect can be excluded from the equation.

An LNB port on the block could have failed, and this was the reason that I previously requested that you swap LNB1 input over with LNB2, as you will only get a signal showing if LNB1 input is OK.

jb38 Here i am again,i have checked f connector in bedroom it is fine.Ihave tested sky+ box upstairs, all i can get on screen is black with white dots???,not even a no signal message.i have reconnected box in bedroom it is same as before.Have reconnected sky+ downstairs,it is fine. When i tested sky+ upstairs i used scart lead,as i have no HDMI ON TV,sky+ downstairs is HDMI lead, have no idea if that matters when testing.Do I really now have to get ladder out? Thanks again

maureen williams: To save any confusion regarding the Sky+ box test on the upstairs TV, when you coupled it up using a scart lead from the Sky+ box into the TV its assumed that you did see the service menu displayed on the TV in question after you pressed the "services" button on the Sky remote control? because if you didn't then the TV might not have automatically changed onto its scart input socket whereby it would still be sitting on its own internal tuner, and which if the TV is an analogue only set would be showing a screen full of speckles.

Just wanted to verify this point before giving any further advice.

jb38,on the thought that the tv could be the problem,i have switched tvs from room to room, the tv that was working on single LNB downstairs no longer works when connected to quad LNB .The tv that was not working on quad upstairs now works on single LNB?????

maureen williams: If you did not see the service on the box that you know is OK then the TV must still have been on its own internal tuner and not on its scart input socket, this easily corrected by pressing the TV/AV button on the TV's remote control.

The point is that if a Sky box is coupled into a TV's No1 (if more than one) scart socket "whilst the box is unpowered" and then left for about 30 seconds after having re-connected the power, then as soon as the box is taken out of standby the TV its connected into will automatically switch over to its scart socket, if and as aforementioned, for any odd reason it doesn't then pressing the TV/AV button on the TV's remote control will switch it over

The other thing about the Sky box being that it doesn't even require the feed from the dish to be connected to see the service menu.

jb38,Hi,Have checked everything again,tv is fine, the only conclusion i can come to is the quad port maybe??Everything seems to work until i try to connect to this. The sky plus box only produced a speckled screen,no menus when connected As you say sods law it may be a ladder job, your help would be appreciated.Having said all this the quad works fine downstairs with sky plus box.I have no clue really,i am guessing, that dish is aligned correctly???
