My uncle who is 86 and partially sited, could get all the Freeview channels perfectley well on his TV with his freeview box before the switch over in his area on 7th September on that day we retuned it for him and he lost BBC1 and BBC2 but when we did the 2nd retune on 21st September hoping to get 1&2 back for him we couldn't get any channels whatsoever and we tried over and over again, but to no avail, finally we rang the number that had been shown on the TV I spoke to the gentleman on the phone and gave him all the details of the freeview box and he went through the retune with me but again nothing happened so he checked the serial number of the box and told me it was out of date, what I want to know how old do they have to be for them to be out of date? I was told my uncle could get a box for free because he was over 75 and partially sited, but when I rang the free number about this I was told because he wasn't registered with them he would have to phone back in a couple of days to do so but even then he would have to wait over a week for an engineer to come and fit him one in, so in the end he ended up having to spend money on a TV set with freeview in as he didn't want to risk another box going out of date and he didn't want to be without a TV for over a week, and at the beginning of all this switchover the public was told it should not cost us anything if we had a freeview box.

Hi, i live in midlands area WS12 and after the first switch over i lost BBC channels and had to retune each time i switched on the TV. Now since 2nd switchover (21st)i have all BBC channels but have to retune each time for ITV channel 4 and 5.... then a few minutes after watching the screen goes blank leaving only sound, then looses completely?? Getting really annoyed now. Rugby the morning was a farce as each returne takes 6 minutes. The phillips tv has freeview built in and i do a full scan each time which removes all channels first.Never had any problems before. Replaced aeriel a 2 years ago with high spec one ready for digital switchover. HELP please, Thanks

Hello,
Before the DSO I could receive all the digital channels on my loft aerial but since I have been having problems. I have disconnected my amp and distributor and now run 4 TV's direct from the aerial. This improved reception but on rescanning for channels find that some are no longer avalable. The signal strength is 80-90 on some channels but 50 on others with no bit errors apart from the HD channels, these have a signal of 85 and pixelate.
Would it be correct to assume that I have the correct aerial (It looks like a W wideband) and it worked before the switchover?
Would fitting a variable attenuater to reduce the signal strength help and bring back the missing channels? I live just 21 miles from the Belmont transmitter.
Any help please.

Dennis Wilson: At that distance from Belmont you should really have any problems, except maybe by the signal being over powerful to the extent that its overloading some devices tuner, as this will cause picture break up in exactly the same way as a weak signal would.

I would leave your distribution amp in circuit so as to guarantee each TV is receiving the same signal as well as isolate them from each other, but do as you have suggested by fitting an attenuator in line with the input to the distribution amp.

This being said provided that the aerial itself doesn't have an amp powered from the distribution one.

Also note that Mux Channels 53 & 60 are on low power (4kw) until November 23rd, and so they will indicate considerably less signal strength when compared to the other main Muxes on 150Kw. (SDN Mux Ch30 on 50Kw)

Your aerial by the way should be perfectly OK, as the Freeview channels are roughly in the same range as was used by the analogue ones.

Trevor Newbery: Yes, that is correct, DVI does not carry audio.

You will need to either use a separate audio link to the TV set, or a separate audio link to an amplifier and speakers.

You can get audio out of the SCART connection (using an appropriate lead) if the box doesn't have a audio-out stereo-pair, or SPDIF (the digital audio connection).

Mrs June Shepherd: I would suggest you have a look at the checklist on the Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice page.
